Tyrrells Equine Clinic Independently owned equine veterinary clinic in rural Hertfordshire.

Established in 2000 and situated in rural North Hertfordshire, Tyrrells Equine Clinic has grown to provide first opinion and referral veterinary care for horses in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, West Essex and Suffolk.

In horses, Cushing’s disease is more accurately referred to as PPID. In horses with PPID, the pituitary gland is overreactive, which can affect the whole horses body. Some of the signs include a long coat, difficulty shedding the coat, laminitis, excessive sweating, excessive drinking/urinating, delayed wound healing and lethargy. Clinical signs and blood tests (an ACTH or TRH stimulation test) can help diagnose PPID, which can be managed in most cases with pergolide.

From the 1st September to the 31st of October there will be complimentary ACTH lab fees for untreated horses over 10 years old with clinical signs or aged horses. The lab fee will be free of charge so you will only have to pay for the visit and the blood sampling fee.

We are currently seeing an increase in confirmed cases of equine influenza, both nationally and within local areas.

Equine influenza is a highly contagious viral disease. Common signs to look out for include:
- Coughing
- Lethargy
- Nasal discharge
- High temperature

The virus spreads easily through the air and can travel up to three miles. This means that even horses who do not leave the yard may still be at risk.

Vaccinated horses often show only mild symptoms or none at all, so keeping vaccinations up to date is essential. Current research suggests that immunity may begin to decline after around six months. Given the increased risk at present, we strongly recommend a booster for any horse that has not been vaccinated within this timeframe.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those who attended our recent gastroscopy clinic. It was a highly successful few days and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and your horses.

A staggering 11 out of 12 horses had gastric ulceration showing the importance of listening to your horses and recognising the common signs that could point towards your horse having gastric ulcer syndrome.

A special mention goes to our outstanding veterinary team, Iris Maric-Mur BSc, BVetMed, PGDip VCP, MRCVS and Dominique Naude BSc, MSc, PGDip VCP, MRCVS, whose expertise and dedication made it all possible. We are also incredibly grateful to our veterinary nurses, Maggie RVN and Louisa RVN, who assisted the vets throughout the clinic and kept things running smoothly.

We were pleased to welcome Claire Akers MSc from Dengie Horse Feeds, who provided excellent guidance to clients on ulcer friendly feeding, adding further value to our gastroscopy clinic.

Due to the high demand, the clinic was fully booked and we apologise to those who were unable to secure a place. Please keep an eye on our page for updates as we hope to offer additional clinics in the future.
