Important update from the Culverden vets.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿพ More Cases of Gastroenteritis in Dogs

Weโ€™re currently seeing an increase in dogs with gastroenteritis, causing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, and lethargy.

This can be more common after periods of heavy rainfall following a long dry spell, as bacteria, parasites, and other contaminants can be washed into puddles and standing water that dogs may drink from or play in.

To help reduce the risk:
๐Ÿ’ง Avoid letting your dog drink from puddles or stagnant water
๐Ÿพ Wash muddy paws and dirty coats after walks
๐Ÿšถ Take fresh water with you on walks

If your dog develops vomiting, diarrhoea, or seems unwell, please contact the team at Culverden Vets for advice.

Dogs struggle with heat far more than humans do, and heatstroke can become life-threatening very quickly.

Here are some simple ways to help your dog stay cool during a heatwave:

๐™๐™จ๐™š ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ค๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ง๐™ž๐™˜๐™๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ

- Freeze part of your dogโ€™s meals inside a Kong, Wobble, Toppl or LickiMat
- Mix kibble with wet food, natural yoghurt (xylitol-free), mashed banana or soaked food before freezing
- Frozen carrots, cucumber or dog-safe fruit can also make great cooling snacks

- Offer chilled or slightly cooled meals
- Add ice cubes to water bowls
- Some dogs enjoy frozen broth cubes (dog-safe, low sodium)

- Close blinds/curtains during the hottest parts of the day
- Puting windscreen sun shades on sunny windows can help reduce heat build-up surprisingly well
- Create shaded rest areas away from direct sunlight
- Use fans for airflow (but remember fans alone do not cool dogs as effectively as humans)
- Put frozen water bottles in fron of your fan to cool the room faster

- If possible walk early morning or late evening only
- Avoid hot pavements! If you cannot comfortably holdthe back of your hand on it for 5 seconds, it is too hot for paws
- Skip intense exercise, ball throwing and runs during heat

- Cooling mats can help if your dog enjoys them
- Damp towels to lie on may help some dogs
- Wrap a frozen water bottle in a towel and place in your dog's bed
- Paddling pools, sniffy water games or shallow water play can be great enrichment

Even with windows cracked open, cars can become fatal within minutes.
If in doubt: leave the dog at home.

- excessive panting
- frantic behaviour
- drooling
- bright red gums
- vomiting
- wobbliness
- collapse

- move the dog somewhere cool
- start cooling with cool (NOT ice-cold) water
- contact your vet immediately

๐™๐™š๐™ข๐™š๐™ข๐™—๐™š๐™ง:
The goal during hot weather is not to โ€œtire the dog outโ€ physically.
Mental enrichment, calm sniffing activities and relaxation are often far safer and more beneficial than heavy exercise in extreme heat.

Stay safe and look after those furry family members ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ๐ŸAdder Season on Ashdown Forest๐Ÿ๐Ÿ

The sun is out and that means adders will be more active, resulting in dog bites.
Strategies to avoid adders this year:
๐ŸAvoid walking your dog in known adder habitats like the โ€˜Ashdown Forestโ€™ between 11AM-5PM (peak times for adder basking/activity).
๐ŸIf you walk your dog in adder risk areas keep it on a short lead on paths at all times.
๐ŸDonโ€™t let it explore the undergrowth.
๐ŸPut a bell on your dogs collar to create a noise for the adder to hear it coming.
