Based in Devizes, Wiltshire, we're a small company primarily producing health and grooming products for horses and dogs. We've been creating and developing skin protection products for over 10 years. From a starting point of needing high quality, affordable products for our own horses, ponies and dogs, we moved on to providing them to friends and riding club members before finally launching them onto the market in 2010. Our original aim remains: selling quality products that actually work at prices that people can afford. A policy of monitoring and development, often following all-important feedback from our customers, means that we constantly improve and refine our product range.

🍂 Mite-y Product Guide: Autumn & Winter Skin Care 🐴

Did you know that mites become a particular concern for horses during the autumn and winter months?

Horses grow thicker winter coats in colder weather creating a warm, sheltered environment where mites can thrive. Horses with feathered legs may be particularly susceptible to Chorioptes mites which can cause skin issues.

Behavioural signs to look out for include rubbing, stamping and biting, while the skin itself can become flaky, scaly and crusty, particularly around the lower legs and feathering.

🍂 FEATHER MITES: WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

As autumn turns to winter, your horse's feathered legs may need a little extra attention.

Feather mites, including Chorioptes mites, can cause changes to the skin around the fetlocks. Longer, denser feathers can make it harder to spot early signs, so regular checks are important.

🔎 Look out for:
• Stamping or rubbing the legs
• Itching around the fetlocks
• Scaly skin, crusts or scabs

🌿 A consistent management routine matters. Keep grooming equipment clean, inspect beneath the feathers regularly and support healthy skin and coat condition.

If you suspect mites, speak to your vet to help identify the cause and establish an appropriate management plan.

Remember, not every itchy or scaly leg is caused by mites.

Warm days, colder nights and changing coats can make this time of year tricky. While many horses can regulate their temperature naturally, every horse is different and there may be times when a rug is appropriate.

If you do choose to rug, one thing that’s easy to overlook is moisture.

A sweaty or damp coat underneath a rug can leave moisture trapped against the skin. This is why it’s important to check your horse regularly, make sure their coat is dry before rugging and pay particular attention to areas prone to moisture.

Face flies are particularly attracted to the eyes, nostrils and muzzle, where they feed on tears and mucus - and they can be incredibly persistent.

As we head into autumn, it's worth keeping up a good fly-care routine:

💦 Remove sweat and grime after exercise
👀 Keep the face clean and check regularly
🪰 Apply an insect repellent
🌿 Keep stables, bedding and turnout areas clean

Autumn doesn't automatically mean the end of fly season!
