“I Just Want My Dog Back”

Sometimes there isn't a comforting answer. You don't want another distraction. You don't want someone to tell you it gets easier. You just want your dog back. And that's okay.

Missing them this deeply is simply another reflection of how deeply you loved them.

Sirius, a four-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever, served as an explosives detection K-9 with the Port Authority Police Department at New York's World Trade Center.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Sirius and his handler, Lieutenant David Lim, were working in the basement of the South Tower when the terrorist attacks began. As Lim rushed to help evacuate people, he placed Sirius safely in his kennel and promised, "I'll be back for you."

Lim survived the collapse of the Twin Towers, but Sirius tragically lost his life when the South Tower fell. His remains were recovered on January 21, 2002, and he was honored with a full police honor guard. Sirius is remembered as the only police K-9 killed in the 9/11 attacks, and his sacrifice continues to symbolize the courage and devotion of the many service animals and first responders who served that day.

Anyone who knows us well knows that we’re a huge fan of Bob Mortimer.

Knowing that he’s a huge fan of cats just like we are and without realising we also share a bit of a thing for giving what some people consider as silly names for our cats.

Bob Mortimer’s habit of giving cats ridiculous names started as a bit of fun. Somehow, it ended up helping thousands of cats waiting for homes.

Anyone who follows Bob will know how much he loves cats. They’ve been part of his life for as long as he can remember.

His first cat was called Billy. When another came along, Bob named it Billy Two and carried on from there.

He once revealed that he found one of his cats while he was living in a homeless hostel in London. Even during a difficult part of his own life, there was room for a cat.

Years later, Bob began making up names for cats on Twitter. They were exactly the sort of names you would expect from him: silly, strangely believable and impossible to forget.

Fond Margaret was one.

Sergeant Walnuts was another.

Then there was DJ Loveham, which still sounds like a cat you might find hosting a late-night radio programme.

People loved the names, but Bob found a way to make them useful as well as funny. Limited-edition pictures featuring his made-up cats were sold to raise money for Cats Protection.

By the end of 2018, the prints had raised £6,801 for the charity.

Bob also visited the National Cat Adoption Centre, where he handed out some of his unusual names to real cats looking for families.

Imagine arriving to adopt a pet and going home with Sergeant Walnuts.

His support carried on after that. Bob helped campaigns for black cats, which can sometimes be harder to rehome. He also supported older cats and donated clothes that were turned into beds for cats living in adoption centres.

He has continued to use those wonderfully daft names to raise money and draw attention to animals that might otherwise be overlooked.

Bob once explained it very simply:

“I’m a big cat lover and have always had them in my life.”

I think there’s something rather lovely about this whole story. Bob didn’t launch some grand campaign or make a big fuss about what he was doing. He took a strange little joke that made people smile and turned it into real help for animals that needed it.

Plenty of people can make us laugh. Using that laughter to do some good is even better - and this is why we love Bob

What is the funniest name you have ever given a pet? 🐈
