Exactly a quarter century ago saw the start of the 2001 Odyssey for ME, in which Akhal-Teke stallion Atamekan, rescued from starvation in Central Asia due to the help of Geldy Kyarizov, carried out a 500-mile sponsored ride from the south coast through the Welsh borders to finish in Edinburgh, ridden by 19 different people (and escorted by a number of local horses along the route) and raising £14,000 for medical research.
