But my dog LOVES other dogs…” 👀

Reactivity doesn’t always come from fear or aggression.

If your dog can’t walk down the road, see another dog or person and continue with what they’re doing without losing control of themselves, that can be reactivity too.

Think about what we sometimes teach puppies…

🐶 Meet this dog!
🐶 Go play with that dog!
🐶 Say hello!
🐶 Everyone is your friend!

Then one day we put them on a lead, walk through the park and suddenly say…

“No. You can’t go and see that dog.”

Your dog might be thinking: Hang on… since when?! 😂

That frustration can turn into pulling, barking, lunging and generally kicking off because they haven’t learnt how to simply exist around other dogs without interacting with them.

Socialisation isn’t about meeting as many dogs and people as possible.

It’s about teaching your dog how to experience the world including how to observe, disengage and move on.

Both under-socialising AND over-socialising can cause problems.

Sometimes the best socialisation is doing absolutely nothing. 👏🐾

Can your dog see another dog and just… carry on? 👀

🐶 Did you know some dogs can be harder for other dogs to read?

Dogs communicate constantly through body language facial expressions, eye contact, ear position, posture and movement.

But sometimes those signals can be a little harder to see. 👀

⚫ Black dogs – subtle facial expressions, particularly around the eyes and mouth, can be less visually obvious to another dog.

🐾 Flat-faced breeds – their facial structure, wrinkles, eye shape and shorter muzzle can make some of the usual facial signals look different or be harder to interpret.

And when another dog can’t quite work out what’s being communicated, you may see hesitation, staring, barking, avoidance or even a bigger reaction.

It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with either dog, sometimes there’s simply a bit of a communication barrier.

This is why we talk so much about neutrality, space and not forcing interactions. Your dog doesn’t need to say hello to every dog they meet. 💚

And there we were thinking dogs were loyal… 🙄😂

Remi is supposedly Hannah’s dog.

Hannah trains her.
Hannah feeds her.
Hannah takes her everywhere.
Hannah has spent YEARS building that relationship…

Then her son turns up and apparently Hannah no longer exists. 💀😂

Even the super recall has mysteriously stopped working.

“REMIIII!”
Remi: Sorry, can’t hear you. I’m with the fun one. 👋🐶

Turns out all that training is no match for your favourite playmate. 😂

Absolutely betrayed.

Anyone else’s dog have a favourite person who ISN’T the person who actually owns them?! 👀👇

WHAT IS CHRIS UP TO NOW?! 👀😂

Well… apparently normal dog training wasn’t challenging enough.

Chris is now teaching Luna to turn the treadmill ON and OFF herself. 🤯🐾

At this point we have two questions…

Is there anything this dog CAN’T do?!
And is there anything Chris can’t break down into steps and teach her?!*😂

This is such a great example of what training can become when you understand how to break a behaviour down, reward each little step and gradually piece it all together. 🧠👏

We’re slightly concerned about what he’s going to teach her next though… 😂

One of the BEST parts of our job… 🥹💚

Those smiles say it all!

We absolutely love seeing our Puppy & Adolescent course teams reach the end of their 5 weeks and get their hands on that all-important certificate and rosette! 🏵️🐾

Five weeks of learning, practising, progressing, having a few “are you actually listening to me?!” moments 😂 and most importantly, building an even better relationship with their dogs.

A huge WELL DONE to all of our recent Cainark graduates! 🎓🐶👏

🎾 Stop just launching the ball over and over… make the game WORK for you! 🧠🐶

With Remi, we’re adding sit, down, wait and a release cue before she gets to retrieve the toy.

In one simple game we’re working on 👇
🐾 Obedience
⏳ Impulse control & thresholds
👀 Engagement
👃 Scent work
🧠 Mental stimulation

Instead of just repeatedly throwing a toy, get your dog thinking, listening and using their nose too!

Give it a go and see just how tired your dog is afterwards! 😴👏
