Fireworks Night is fast approaching

For many pets, fireworks can be a very stressful and frightening experience. The loud bangs, bright flashes and unfamiliar smells can leave them feeling anxious - but there is still time to put a plan in place.

A few simple steps can help your pet feel safer:

🐾 Create a quiet, cosy space away from windows and noise, with familiar bedding, toys and water.
🐾 Keep them indoors, with doors, windows and curtains closed before fireworks begin.
🐾 Walk dogs earlier in the day, while it is still light and keep them on a lead for toilet trips.
🐾 Use calming background noise, such as the TV or gentle music.
🐾 Offer a puzzle feeder, favourite toy or treat activity if they enjoy these.
🐾 Check that ID tags and microchip details are up to date - frightened pets can sometimes try to escape.

Signs of stress can include panting, pacing, trembling, hiding, excessive drooling, barking, clinginess or trying to run away. Some pets show only subtle changes in behaviour, so keep a close eye on them.

If your pet has struggled with fireworks before, please speak to us well in advance. We can discuss the most suitable options for their individual needs - from environmental changes and calming aids to, where appropriate, prescription medication. Early planning is important, as finding the right approach may take time.

Meet our new team members
This month, we have welcomed two lovely new members to our team. Please join us in saying hello to Clare, our new Registered Veterinary Nurse, and Emma, our new Receptionist and Animal Care Assistant.

Meet Clare
Clare qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2015 and has been nursing for 14 years. She has additional qualifications in nursing wildlife, small mammals, reptiles, birds and zoo species - a particular area of interest for her.

At home, Clare has a dog who she hand-reared after he was born by caesarean section at a practice where she previously worked, as well as two cats and four ferrets.

Clare also volunteers with German Shepherd Rescue Elite and at Port Lympne and Howletts Zoo.

Meet Emma
Emma has worked in the veterinary industry since leaving school. Although she has had a couple of years away from the profession, her passion for working with animals has always remained.

Emma has a fondness for all animals and shares her home with two cats, two musk turtles and six giant African land snails!

We are so pleased to welcome Clare and Emma to the team, please join us in giving them both a very warm welcome!

Sadly, a young black-and-white domestic short hair female cat has been brought to us deceased after being found in the Northcote Road area of Strood. Unfortunately, she is not microchipped.

Puppy Caesar and his amazing disappearing ears came to see us for a weight check recently.

It's important to monitor puppies as they grow so we can keep track of their weight and make sure they are on track developmentally. It also makes sure we give the correct size preventative care as they change so quickly!

Most importantly it gives us a chance for treats, cuddles and absolutely adorable photos like these. 🥰

Gorgeous Meeko recently visited us for his castration and microchip.

Castration is a relatively quick and straightforward procedure that involves removing the testicles. It normally requires no stitches and most cats recover quickly.

Castration reduces the urge to roam for males, so can also help decrease the risk of your cat becoming involved in road traffic accidents. It also reduces the need to fight for territory and females, which in turn reduces injuries and the risk of disease being spread.

Meet Merlin – looking handsome as ever after his recent neutering procedure!

While Merlin was under anaesthetic, we also implanted his microchip – a quick, safe, and permanent form of identification that can make all the difference if he ever goes missing.

-Since 10 June 2024, it’s a legal requirement in England for all cats over 20 weeks old to be microchipped and registered with up-to-date owner details.

-Microchipping helps us reunite lost, stolen, or injured pets with their families quickly and safely.

We are proud to support The Hygiene Bank Medway by hosting a collection drop-off point at our practice.

The Hygiene Bank helps local people experiencing hygiene poverty. We are collecting new and unopened essential hygiene and household cleaning products, including:

-Nappies
-Shampoo and conditioner
-Shower gel
-Washing-up liquid and handwash
-Toothpaste and toothbrushes
-Deodorant

You will find a collection box in our reception area, so if you’re visiting us for your pet’s appointment, please consider bringing along an item to donate.

Every donation, however small, can make a meaningful difference to someone in our local community.

Have you lost a lovely tabby and white female cat in the Cedar Road area of Strood?

She was brought into us on Saturday morning and is a beautiful, friendly girl. She is microchipped, but unfortunately the registered details are out of date, so we have not been able to contact her owner.

If you think this cat may be yours, please contact us as soon as possible on 01634 481211. Proof of ownership will be required before she can be reunited with you.
