Let’s talk teeth 🦷

Sweet Meg here was booked in for some dental treatment recently, so RVN Milly performed a full scale & polish under general anaesthetic👩‍⚕️

The ultrasonic scale used removes all of the plaque from the teeth - the sticky film which is made up of bacteria, saliva & food stuff

Left in place plaque hardens with minerals & turns in to tartar - happening in just a few days, this then feels like cement & it grips tightly to the teeth
This can lead to tooth decay, inflamed gums, bad breath & even tooth loss! 🙁

Once the teeth are fully clean (which includes a scale under the gum margin), the teeth are then polished using a motorised rubber cup & special paste, to smooth the tooth surfaces to try help stop new plaque from sticking 👍

After this routine clean up procedure patients are then passed over to one of the vets, for them to perform any necessary extractions 👩‍⚕️

Luckily Meg only needed a scale & polish in this instance ☺️ You can see what a difference this made in the pre & post op photos! 📸

Dental care is extremely important for your pets, just as it is for us humans 🦷

If left unmanaged/untreated dental concerns can lead to very painful conditions such as cavities & abscesses, and of course cause halitosis - stinky breath 🤢

Also as mouths contain so many bacteria, constant swallowing of infected saliva can lead to heart, liver and kidney issues! 😳 Therefore you are not only caring for oral health by having routine dental checks & any necessary procedures, you are assisting in ongoing overall health 👍

During all general health checks our vets will include oral examinations, however if you have any particular worries about your pet’s teeth please do book an appointment for a check up 😁

Vet Sarah fell in love recently with ‘Bernard’, the extremely handsome, adorable (& rather large!) Irish Wolfhound 🐶🥰

Bernard presented with a nasty ear infection; a condition which he has suffered from previously 🙁👂

Using a specific ear cleaning solution, Sarah gave Bernard’s ears a thorough cleansing, then she administered the first dose of his ear drops
These will work to treat the infection, reduce any inflammation & make his ears feel more comfortable 😊

Sarah also gave his owners some advice on maintenance & prevention care to try help avoid any further issues 👍

Ear problems are a common ailment we see in practice, with some breeds of dogs being more susceptible than others; those with long, floppy ears, narrow ear canals, or those with particularly hairy ears. Think Labradoodles, Cockapoos, Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels and Bassett Hounds for instance 🐶
However, any breed of dog is at risk in reality & those who love to swim, or those who have allergies, are at a higher risk!

So, what do you need to look out for?🧐

Firstly, make sure you regularly check your dog’s ears Knowing what is normal for your dog allows you to spot any changes sooner

The ears should be nice & clean, with no discharge or redness & no odours 👃

Also, keep an eye on your dog for any scratching of their ears, shaking their heads or shying away/crying when you stroke their heads

Should you notice any of these symptoms then please do come in to see us for a health check👩‍⚕️

Ear infections can be incredibly painful, and if left untreated can lead to serious problems, therefore it is vital that any issues are treated as soon as possible 😌

Give us a call if you have any concerns on 01706 656559 📞

We hope you are feeling better Bernard & we will look forward to seeing you on your next visit to us ☺️

Please welcome Louis, our newest team member who has joined us as an animal nursing assistant 😊

Louis has worked in veterinary care for the last 2years. He has 2 cats, Bug & Twiggy, who were both strays he fell in love with & rehomed from practice 🐈‍⬛

He loves both dogs & cats, loving large breed dogs specifically 🐶

He has a special interest in wildlife rescue, especially pigeons. During the last football Euros he hand reared 2 wood pigeons, calling them Belling & Ham 😆

Having loved animals his whole life, and after volunteering with horses, it was an obvious choice for him to get a job in practice to kick start his career 😁

He is already well loved by the staff & has slotted in perfectly!!

Please say hi to him next time you are in to see us 👋

Poor Ronnie presented to us with a fishing hook stuck in his leg 🐶 😩 🪝

Vets Helen & Sarah were luckily able to remove it ok by snipping off the barbed point, then pulling the rest out thru the skin.

This case is one that unfortunately occurs more than you’d think! Ask most veterinary staff & they will tell you they have seen these cases a few times 👀

Please speak to any fisherman you know & ask them to take great care of their hooks & ensure none are left behind.

Owned pets are lucky as their owners will discover the problem & seek veterinary help. Wildlife do not have anyone to do this so they are left to suffer the injury 😞

Thankfully Ronnie will be right as rain now the hook has been removed 🐶🥰

Meet Archie the gorgeous golden retriever 🐶

There are 4 weeks in between the first & second pics, which just goes to show how quickly puppies grow 😁

With this in mind, it’s a good opportunity to discuss the importance of puppy nutrition 👍

We always recommend feeding a balanced, growth specific puppy food. This is due to the fact that puppies need the correct calories, nutrients; such as vitamins & minerals, to support their bone & muscle growth, energy requirements & digestive capabilities ☺️

At the practice we work closely with Virbac veterinary diets, therefore we can offer guidance on life stage dietary support.

Do you have a growing puppy? Want to ensure you are setting them up for the best start in life? Make an appointment to come & see us on 01706 656559 📞

We can advise you on dietary needs, parasite treatments & any medical concerns.
We offer free puppy & kitten nurse checks until 6 months of age, where we can discuss any issues you may have. Plus regular visits to the vets whilst young allows for your pet’s confidence in coming to see us ☺️

Canine parvovirus has been reported in our area over the last 7 days ⚠️

Parvovirus is an extremely serious, highly contagious & vaccine preventable disease 🦠

We have been alerted about this through a disease reporting system we use, which helps practices stay informed, reinforce preventative education to pet owners, & protect at-risk vulnerable pets through on going vaccination.

Signs & symptoms include-

* severe bloody or mucous diarhhoea

* vomiting; including preventing even water consumption

* extreme lethargy

* loss of appetite

* fever

* abdominal pain

If your dog shows any of these symptoms we would classify this as an emergency so please book an appointment as soon as possible to see us on 01706 656559 📞

Please ensure that your dog is up to date with its annual vaccinations.
This injection saves lives every year & the more dogs that have it done ensure the safety of your and others pets.

Vets Emma & Vince saw an interesting case today!

Winnie presented after repeated bouts of sneezing after rummaging under a bush 🤧

She was anaesthetised & a rigid endoscope was used to check her nose & throat

We found a piece of twig stuck in her nasal passage but were luckily able to remove it ☺️

She recovered extremely well this afternoon & was able to go back home with her family 🐶 We expect her to make a full recovery but she’ll come back for a check up soon 👍

Should your pet show signs of constant sneezing please come in to see us, it may not just be a cold but a potential foreign body 🙈
