🐾 Maisie’s fishing line fright! 🪝
It happens to us too… 😳
Maisie is a gorgeous Cocker Spaniel belonging to one of our wonderful nurses, Eleanor.
During a walk alongside a waterway, Maisie came back chewing on something. It wasn’t until a friend spotted what looked like a piece of string hanging from her mouth that Eleanor realised it was actually a fishing line! 🐠
Quick-thinking Eleanor scooped Maisie up and headed straight to our Ripon Hospital. An X-ray revealed our worst fears: a sizeable fishing hook was lodged deep in her oesophagus and chest.
Using our new gastroscope, our team carefully worked together to release the hook and remove the line under general anaesthesia. It was a real team effort, involving quick thinking, plenty of kit-finding and lots of nervous anticipation!
Two hours later, Maisie was safely recovering, with her oesophagus thankfully unharmed. The celebrations were HUGE – apparently, you could hear the cheers from reception! 🥹🎉
Our top tips to help keep your dog safe:
🎣 Keep dogs on leads around people who are actively fishing.
🪝 Watch out for discarded fishing hooks and lines near waterways.
🚨 If your dog swallows a fishing line or a hook, contact your vet immediately. Never pull on the line or try to remove it yourself.
We’re so relieved Maisie is doing well. We care for every patient as if they were our own, and this little lady certainly reminded us why we love what we do. ❤️🐶
