🌾GRASS SEEDS🌾

This time of year, grass seeds become a common and potentially serious problem for dogs across the UK.

These small, dart-shaped seeds can easily get stuck to your dog including on their:
🐾 Paws
👁 Eyes
👂 Ears
👃 Nose
🦴 Armpits
🐶 Groin

Because of their pointed shape, grass seeds can burrow into the skin and travel deeper into the body, causing painful infections and sometimes requiring surgery to remove.

Signs to look out for:

• Excessive licking or chewing at paws
• Sudden head shaking or ear scratching
• Sneezing repeatedly
• Swollen, red or painful areas
• Limping
• Eye redness or discharge

You can help to prevent a problem by:

• Checking your dog thoroughly after walks
• Keeping fur around paws trimmed
• Avoiding long, dry grass where possible

If you notice any of the above signs or are concerned, please contact us promptly - early treatment may prevent more serious complications.

Stay safe and enjoy your summer walks☀️

Erin is one of our Student Veterinary Nurses and joined the team in 2023. She is currently working towards her veterinary nursing qualification.

At home, Erin has what can only be described as a small zoo… including her Dachshund Enzo, two cats Maggie and Myrtle, guinea pigs, rabbits, a ferret, a western hognose snake, a crested gecko, a Bosc monitor as well as chickens and quail.

At work, Erin loves meeting all of our patients, particularly exotics, small furries, and the more nervous or spicy characters.

Outside of work, she’s usually with Enzo or one of her many animals, out on a beach walk or paddleboard… or helping with the heavy horses at the Heavy Horse Centre.

A M A N D A

Amanda is one of our Senior Veterinary Nurses and joined the team in 2024. Her journey into veterinary nursing began at just 12 years old, working as a kennel cleaner after school. This sparked her passion for the profession and in 2015 she qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

Amanda has nursed a wide range of species, from an otter to horses and has also worked in referral practice where she experienced some incredible aspects of veterinary medicine.

Amanda has been a clinical coach and enjoys supporting and teaching our student nurses, passing on her knowledge and skills to the next generation of nurses.

Outside of work, Amanda spends most of her time with her working cocker spaniel Izzie, exploring the New Forest. She also has a passion for arts and crafts, creating beautiful pet portraits using soft pastels, some of which can be seen displayed in our Fordingbridge and Ringwood branches. One of her highlights of 2025 was entering her artwork into the Ellingham Show, where she won 1st and 3rd place… a very talented member of the team!

C H A R L O T T E

Charlotte is Head Nurse at our Fordingbridge branch and a very important part of the team!

At work, Charlotte particularly enjoys nursing geriatric patients as well as making the most of her medicine and laboratory skills… she can often be found looking down the microscope! Charlotte is also a clinical coach to our student nurses, supporting them throughout their training and does a wonderful job taking the time to teach and guide them.

At home, Charlotte is kept busy with her two children, two bengal cats and two dogs Labrador Skylar and her Cocker Spaniel Figgy. In her spare time, you’ll likely find her spending time with her family… or baking something delicious!

We’re very grateful for everything she does!
