As Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month comes to a close, all of our nurses and VCAs received a special cup with messages celebrating just how amazing they are and how much we appreciate each and every one of them — perfect for keeping hydrated in this hot weather!

A huge shoutout to our fabulous nursing team. We simply couldn’t do what we do without you. Thank you for your hard work, 'compassion and empathy' and dedication every single day!

They are here 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, providing dedicated care and support whenever it’s needed.

We hope you’re having a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend, but rest assured that if something happens and your pet needs to be referred to us, the team will be here and ready to help.

Look at this beautiful face!

Dexter was referred to SCVS with acute tetraparesis. He was initially examined by the neurology team and was diagnosed with idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, an autoimmune disorder that damages the motor nerve roots leading to progressive weakness and loss of function. He was unable to move by himself and even struggled to lift his head. He started physiotherapy immediately and over time his strength increased and his ability to change his overall position markedly improved.

After 8 weeks of rehabilitation, hydrotherapy was additionally introduced in our underwater treadmill. This form of therapy helps to support a dog's weight whilst it is trying to relearn a regular gait pattern and improve its strength. Two months of continued therapy saw Dexter return to his previous walking ability and he is now fully independent and free to return to his previous adventures!

Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month is the perfect time to announce the date of this years nursing congress!

This full-day event is designed to support those looking to develop their clinical knowledge, strengthen practical skills, and gain confidence across a variety of disciplines. Through a combination of engaging lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on practical sessions, delegates will leave with valuable insights and techniques that can be applied directly within practice.

May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, and each year we take the opportunity to celebrate our amazing nursing team.

At SCVS, we have more than 70 incredible nurses, supported by a fabulous team of VCAs. Together, they provide outstanding care for your animals 24 hours a day — morning, noon, and night — working alongside our talented veterinary team.

This year’s campaign theme is Compassion and Empathy, and we are so lucky to have a nursing team who demonstrate these qualities every single day.

We are delighted to celebrate that Derek, Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia here at SCVS, has recently been appointed as a Founding Fellow in Pain Management by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA). This honour is awarded by the College to recognise Diplomates "who demonstrate advanced clinical expertise, leadership and scholarly contributions in veterinary pain management". It allows Derek to now mentor other Diplomates in relevant clinical disciplines towards achieving Pain Management Fellowship through a rigorous training programme set out by ACVAA.

Derek's recognition as a Founding Fellow highlights his commitment (and that of our entire team) to providing optimal, individualised pain management for every patient who passes through SCVS.
