❤️🐾Meet Toffee, Minnie and Mabli — three tiny girls with a story that is heartbreaking to tell, but one that deserves to be heard. 💔🐹
These beautiful girls came to us as part of a much larger rescue, where more than 200 guinea pigs were saved.
Before rescue, their lives had been about breeding. Despite their own very obvious health problems, they had been subjected to back-to-back pregnancies, their little bodies used to produce babies again and again.
And when you look at them, it is difficult to understand how anyone could have thought their bodies were strong enough to cope.
💕 Minnie and Mabli are both incredibly tiny, around the size you would expect a four-month-old guinea pig to be.
Both girls have neurological problems. Minnie is blind, while Mabli is partially sighted. Yet neither of those things stops them from enjoying their lives now. They know our voices, they know when food is coming, and most importantly, they are learning what it means to feel safe.
💕 Toffee is only slightly bigger. She has clubbed front paws and, when she first arrived, she was almost bald. Her poor little body told its own story of just how much she had been through.
Heartbreakingly, both Toffee and Minnie arrived pregnant.
For a guinea pig as tiny as Minnie, giving birth was incredibly worrying. Somehow, this brave little girl delivered three healthy babies and, thankfully, survived the birth herself. We are so grateful that she and her babies made it through.
Sadly, Toffee wasn't so fortunate.
She miscarried. 💔
These girls should never have been put in that position in the first place.
Today, thankfully, their story is very different.
Toffee, Minnie and Mabli are thriving. They are making wonderful progress, surrounded by comfort, proper food, veterinary care and, above all, love.
Because of their ongoing and complex needs, they will never leave us.
This is their forever home. ❤️
They will never again be bred.
They will never again be expected to produce babies for somebody else's profit.
They will never have to wonder where their next meal is coming from.
And they will never have to live without knowing that they are loved.
But looking at these three little faces leaves us asking the same question:
When will people stop treating these amazing animals as a way to make money?
When will people stop keeping guinea pigs in awful conditions, breeding them relentlessly, failing to provide the nutrition and veterinary care they desperately need, and putting their lives at risk with pregnancy after pregnancy?
Guinea pigs are not breeding machines.
They are intelligent, sensitive little animals. They feel fear. They feel pain. They form bonds. They have individual personalities. And they deserve so much more than a life determined by how much money somebody can make from them.
Toffee, Minnie and Mabli did not deserve what happened to them. None of them did.
We can't change their past but we can make absolutely certain that their future is filled with everything their past was missing.
Safety.
Comfort.
Kindness.
Full tummies.
Gentle hands.
And an enormous amount of love. ❤️
Our three tiny girls may carry the effects of their past with them forever, but their past will never define the rest of their lives.
From now on, they are home. 🐹🐹🐹💕
