A petition calling for a national strategy to tackle cat overpopulation and growing pressure on animal rescue centres has now received more than 14,000 signatures.

The petition calls for action to expand access to affordable cat neutering, support overstretched rescue organisations and improve education around responsible pet ownership.

It also asks the Government to review measures aimed at reducing irresponsible breeding and the abandonment of cats.

The petition comes amid warnings from animal welfare charities about increasing pressure on the UK's rescue sector.

Earlier this year, the RSPCA reported a 72% rise in the number of cats entering its care, describing the increase as unprecedented for that time of year. Charities warned of a “cat crisis”, with rising numbers of unwanted kittens linked to cats not being neutered.

The RSPCA has also reported that the number of animals in its care reached a six-year high, with almost half being accommodated in emergency boarding because its centres were full.

The petition says animal rescues across the UK are facing increasing pressure, with some centres unable to accept more cats and kittens.

It argues that a national approach could help reduce the number of unwanted animals entering the rescue system while improving cat welfare.

The proposed strategy would focus on four key areas: affordable neutering, support for rescue centres, responsible pet ownership education, and measures to tackle irresponsible breeding and abandonment.

The petition is open until 19 February 2027.

A progress update issued on 24 August 2026 confirmed that the petition had passed the 10,000-signature threshold required for a Government response.

The Government said:

“This petition got more than 10,000 signatures meaning that government will respond to it.”

Hi,my baby Rory never came back for his dinner. He is 16 months old maine c**n extremely friendly with humans obsessed with food. He never went further than next door neighbour garden. He's friendly seeking cuddles and that's why I believe someone took him. I contacted registered microchip company and he's now under "stollen". Please bring my baby back. He was gifted to me for my 45th birthday and he's my big spoiled baby. All his mates missing him 😢 Please help me get Rory back! 😭

I took the evil queen her self to my home. I was dreading the moment due how unfriendly she have been in the cafe and I've so many different animals here I was expecting a fights.
But she left me sp*echless. No ONE fight! Mimi settled straight into my bed with JoJo (tiny dog) nudging me,making biscuits and purring loudly! ❤️
This experience make me believe in the right household she will bloom into purrefect companion! Just prepare your self you will never p*e alone 😹
Mimi is spayed microchipped and vaccinated.
