🌡️ Heatwave Alert for Reptile Keepers! 🦎🐍🐢
With temperatures soaring across the UK, it's important to keep a close eye on your reptiles and their enclosures.
✅ Monitor enclosure temperatures regularly – Ambient temperatures can rise much higher than normal during a heatwave, even with your usual setup.
✅ Check your thermostats are working correctly – A reliable thermostat is your first line of defence against overheating.
✅ Provide cooler areas – Make sure your reptile can move away from heat sources and access cooler zones within the enclosure.
✅ Keep fresh water available at all times – Increased temperatures can lead to dehydration much faster than normal.
✅ Watch for signs of overheating – Excessive soaking, prolonged open-mouth breathing (in species where this is unusual), lethargy, or frantic attempts to escape the enclosure can all be warning signs.
✅ Avoid placing enclosures in direct sunlight – Even a few hours of direct sun through a window can cause dangerous temperature spikes.
🌿 For bioactive setups, extra misting may be required to help maintain humidity levels, but be careful not to create overly damp conditions for species that prefer a drier environment.
If you're unsure whether your setup is coping with the heat, pop into the store or send us a message. We're always happy to help make sure your reptiles stay safe and comfortable during the warmer weather.
Stay cool and keep those scales safe! ☀️🦎
