K is for Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiotape is a form of stretchy elastic tape which works by lifting the skin away from underlying tissues to improve circulation, mobility and reduce pressure on pain receptors.

Depending on the technique used during application, the tape can also be used to stimulate muscles and nerves or alternatively provide joint and ligament support.

The tape we use in our sessions is specifically designed to work alongside clipped or short pet fur. Whilst there are still some limitations with regards to practical application with dogs, we find it to be a great addition to a variety of treatment plans.

The cases shown in the photos below were used to treat stifle arthritis, degenerative disc disease and carpal hyperextension!

Wishing Poppy a happy 13th birthday today🥳🎈

Poppy has recently returned for regular hydrotherapy to help manage her back pain and hip stiffness. She’s always a pleasure to treat and we love watching her enjoy her treadmill sessions so much!🥰

J is Joint mobility!

Like us, dogs have equivalent versions of our arm and leg joints🦴 As veterinary physiotherapists we are trained to assess joint range of motion to allow us to detect restrictions and stiffness🦮

However we also use mobilisation techniques in our treatments to have a therapeutic effect, helping to improve mobility! This is something we regularly recommend for owners to do at home as well💪🏼

In the images, Luna is demonstrating a hindlimb ‘bicycle’ mobilisation which replicates the movement of the leg during running. This is useful to perform during periods of inactivity, surgical recovery or with older dogs suffering from arthritis. Get in touch if you’d like to know more!💙📞

6 year old lurcher Poppy was ready to play after her last hydro session. Poppy and her older sister Jess come for regular laser and hydrotherapy after they both required separate surgeries on their back legs last year.

They are both fab patients and making great progress with their sessions. Jess has built up over 1cm of muscle diameter which is amazing for a 13 year old dog and Poppy had the chance to trial the pool for the first time which she loved!

Well done girls🥰🐾🐕

I is IVDD

Whilst intervertebral disc disease is more common in breeds such as Dachshunds and French bulldogs, it’s important for all dog owners to be aware of the warning signs.

In mild-moderate cases, the dog may still be able to walk but will show behavioural signs of pain consisting of reduced appetite, lethargy and/or unusual aggression when being touched or stroked. The more obvious physical signs may consist of postural changes such as a low head position and hunching through the back, as well as loss of hindlimb strength, a wobbly "drunken-like" movement to the back legs and incorrect paw placement otherwise known as "knuckling".

Noticing these signs and taking your dog straight to the vets can be imperitive in getting a quick diagnosis. Early intervention such as surgery may be required to reduce risk of the condition worsening before starting rehabilitation consisting of strict rest, medical management, physiotherapy and gentle hydrotherapy later in their recovery💗

H couldn’t be anything other than Hydrotherapy!

Hydrotherapy forms the core of most of our treatment plans as its versatile nature makes it suitable for so many different rehabilitation cases!

Hydrotherapy utilises the natural properties of warm water to have an effect:

💧 Buoyancy minimises the impact of body weight on the joints allowing movement to feel much more comfortable
💧 Resistance helps build muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness
💧 The temperature of the water is kept between 28-32 degrees to promote muscle relaxation and improved circulation
💧 Hydrostatic pressure is the result of the density of the water which helps stimulate nerves and reduce swelling

By performing hydrotherapy in either the pool or underwater treadmill, we can accelerate recovery from surgery or help manage long term conditions such as osteoarthritis💦🐾💙

17 year old Paddy was in today to see Amy for a McTimoney Chiropractic treatment and to trial kinesiology taping for his back legs.

McTimoney therapy is based on the principles of chiropractics for humans but adjusted to provide a very gentle approach suited specifically for animals. Amy comes to the practice once a month for her patients to help realign the musculoskeletal system to restore range of motion and balance 🩻🙌🏼🐕

Our physiotherapist Esme then applied kinesiotape to help stimulate the muscles of Paddy’s thigh and improve sensation to his paw to improve his proprioception and gait patterning 🐾💪🏼🐶

If you want to find out whether your dog would benefit from a McTimoney session or to trial kinesiotape, feel free to get in touch to discuss with the team further📞🥰

Laser therapy is something we integrate into our hydrotherapy and physiotherapy sessions on a daily basis. Most dogs learn to enjoy the gentle warming sensation of the treatment and we often see improvements in their mobility straight away!

Therapevo are a UK-based company offering a range of electrotherapy products for both pet owners and therapists to integrate into their treatment plans. We’ve recently been working alongside Therapevo to try out their Powercure Pro device and we’re seeing great results with regular use at home!
