🐾 Why retractable (flexi) leads and reactive dogs don’t mix…

If you’ve got a reactive dog, your lead is your safety line — and this is where flexi leads can become a real risk 👇

💡 One of the biggest misconceptions:
“That I can just use the lock if something happens.”

The reality is… ❌ that lock is NOT a reliable safety point

Here’s why 👇

⚠️ Reaction time matters
When your dog reacts (lunging, barking, pulling), it happens FAST.
By the time you press the lock, your dog is already at the end of the lead — often with force.

⚠️ No solid control
A flexi lead doesn’t give you a fixed length or stable handling point.
With a reactive dog, you need consistency and control — not unpredictability.

⚠️ Increased intensity of reactions
Your dog can build speed and hit the end of the lead harder, which can actually increase frustration and reactivity.

⚠️ Distance = danger
More distance means less control.
Your dog can reach triggers before you can safely manage the situation.

⚠️ Risk of injury
Thin cords + sudden lunging = potential for burns, cuts, or getting tangled — for both dogs and people 😬

🐶 With reactive dogs, management is everything

We want:
✔️ Close, calm control
✔️ Clear communication
✔️ The ability to create distance before a reaction happens

✨ The right tools set your dog up to succeed

A standard lead or long line gives you far more control, safety, and training opportunity.

🐶 Let’s talk about muzzles – and why they’re actually a positive training tool

Muzzles often get a bad reputation, but the truth is… they can be one of the kindest, safest, and most responsible tools we can use for our dogs 💛

A properly fitted muzzle is not a punishment. When introduced correctly, your dog can feel completely comfortable wearing one – just like putting on a harness or lead.

✨ So why use a muzzle?

✔️ Safety for everyone – It keeps your dog, other dogs, and people safe while you work through training.
✔️ Reduces stress for YOU – When you feel calmer, your dog feels calmer.
✔️ Prevents rehearsal of unwanted behaviour – Your dog can’t practise biting, which helps break the habit.
✔️ Gives your dog more freedom – Instead of avoiding walks, you can still get out and train safely.
✔️ Supports positive training – It allows us to work on confidence and behaviour without risk.

💡 Important:
A muzzle should always be introduced gradually using rewards, so your dog builds a positive association with it. We want them to think: “Yay, muzzle = good things!”

🐾 Muzzles don’t mean a ‘bad dog’
They mean a responsible owner who is advocating for their dog and setting them up to succeed.

Whether it’s for reactivity, vet visits, scavenging, or just extra peace of mind – muzzles can be a brilliant tool when used correctly.

Meet Dolce 🐾

Dolce came to us today for a consultation with her owners. She’s a rescue from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and has been struggling with high levels of dog reactivity.

We started by giving Dolce the mental stimulation she needed to help bring her into a calmer, more focused state. Once she was in a better headspace, we introduced her to Winter.

At first, Dolce showed us exactly what her reactivity looks like — which is so important for us to see and work through.

From there, we got to work.

Through structured lead work and clear guidance, Dolce began to settle… and what happened next was a huge breakthrough. She was able to get closer to another dog than her owners have ever seen before — a massive step in the right direction 🙌

This is just the beginning for Dolce. There’s still plenty of work to be done, but today showed exactly what she’s capable of with the right structure, consistency, and guidance.

Reactive dogs aren’t “lost causes” — they just need clear direction and owners willing to put the work in.

📩 If you’re struggling with a reactive dog, message us to book your consultation.

Well done Dolce 👏 we can’t wait to see her progress!❤️

** Important Message from our Principal, Jo Middleton **

Today I’m heading to the House of Lords for something that feels genuinely historic for canine welfare ... the official launch of the Innate Health Assessment (IHA) Tool.

For as long as I can remember I have advocated to end the cruelty that humans have inflicted up dogs through breeding for aesthetics.

To be blunt, we have bred suffering into generations of animals who never asked for it.

Flat faces.
Spines that don't flex.
Bulging eyes.
Compromised breathing.
Painful skin, joints, and neurological issues.

All because, somewhere along the line, how dogs looked and our human egos became more important than welfare.

But today marks the beginning of a shift.

The IHA Tool, brain child of the All Parliamnetary Group for Animal Welfare, is launching.

This 10 point assessment is built from 15 years of RVC research and supported across the veterinary and welfare sectors. It gives everyone, including breeders and prospective guardians, a simple, accessible way to assess what healthy, innate conformation truly looks like.

And I’m incredibly proud that International Institute For Canine Ethics, Canine Principles and The International School for Canine Psychology and Behaviour - ISCP are supporters of this work amongst many others like our Canine Principles partners the BSAVA, RVC, the Kennel Club, Dogs Trust, Blue Cross, Battersea, Wood Green, Hope Rescue and many others ❤️.

Education and compassionate positive action at this level are truly powerful.

This tool empowers ordinary people to make extraordinary change.
It removes the guesswork.
It removes the excuses.
And, if used widely, it will save countless dogs from a lifetime of preventable suffering.

Today isn’t about blame.
It’s about progress.
It’s about choosing better for the dogs of tomorrow and giving people the knowledge to do so.

I completely get that many might look at this with scepticism and think, "people won’t use it." I know that not everyone will. But this is a MASSIVE leap of progress. And every guardian or breeder who does use the tool is one step closer to preventing a lifetime of suffering for a dog.

A breeding revolution has officially begun.

And I’m beyond excited to be standing in the room where it starts.
