Ten years of you 💕

These photos were taken ten years apart. The first was taken exactly ten years ago today, on Olive's gotcha day, the day we brought her home from Dogs Trust. She was ten months old.

Over the last decade, I've learned so much from this dog. The more I've understood her, the more I've realised how much of myself I see in her. We really are more alike than I ever expected.

Things Olive has taught me (mostly by forcing me to learn them) and things we have in common:

1. Your genetics can make you a little spicy. It's better to work with your wiring than spend your life fighting it and trying to be something you're not.

2. We both have fairly short social batteries and can be prickly AF towards members of our own species at times 😅

3. We're both working-line girls. We need purpose, we like having a job and we both get a bit feral without one.

4. We've both had spats with the neighbours (and won) 😂

5. If you're one of our people, you've got us for life. Loyalty is probably our fiercest quality.

She's never been just my dog. She's been my shadow, my partner in crime, my biggest challenge, my best teacher and the one who has seen every version of me over the last ten years without ever asking me to be anyone else. She's wildly intelligent and stares so deeply into your soul it somehow feels like there's more than canine in there.

What a privilege it is to have a connection like this and to be loved back in the uncomplicated and loyal way that only a dog can do.

Happy ten years, Olive. Thanks for choosing me, I love you more than you'll ever know. ❤️
