Sienna 💕 the absolute love of my life (along with my daughter of course) but this dog is something else, her resilience, kindness and beautiful nature is everything and I feel so lucky to share my life with her. Adopted in 2020 from Cyprus, has 3 legs and half an ear missing, not sure why, and she is a pointer x spaniel with a few other random breeds thrown in. She has seen me through a very challenging 6 years, all of which I won’t list as it’s a lot 😅 but my quiet plodding walks with her and a coffee in hand everyday literally got me through the toughest of times after my first daughter died, as well as her constant love, quiet companionship and her eyes which see straight into your soul! So as I said she is special 🤩 dogs are just the best! She also has had her traumas in life obviously and as a result suffers badly from arthritis in her one remaining back leg which I try and manage as best I can to keep her comfortable.

Each week I will have a “Sienna Says” post which will be an informative snippet of either a training tip or general advice or a saying, kind of anything really….dog related obviously. Hopefully you will find them helpful and if not you can just enjoy a photo of Sienna 💕 the last video is a snippet of when we picked her up, straight off the plane from Cyprus, special moment meeting her 🥰

Quick & easy bit of enrichment to start your week….made this morning and gave to them this evening when we had just got back from a walk and needed something to calm them down whilst I was doing the toddler bedtime
👉🏼Takes approximately 1 minute
👉🏼Prepped this whilst waiting for the kettle to boil
👉🏼 I used pate & cream cheese but you can use yoghurt, peanut butter (must be free from xylitol), bone broth, their own wet food, basically anything that is safe and easy to freeze
👉🏼Pop in the freezer for a few hours
👉🏼 Took the dogs about 20 mins
👉🏼 Frozen Licki mats for the win in the warmer weather which is forecast in the coming weeks

Dog Body Language…massive topic but so overlooked and misunderstood by many dog owners/guardians. Ever heard or said “oh their tails are wagging so they must be happy” this is false, a wagging tail does not always mean a happy tail. So many negative encounters and interactions could be prevented if we levelled up our knowledge of what our dogs are ACTUALLY telling us. They are always communicating but in a language most don’t understand. The rise of dog bites again could be prevented if we understood body language. See below for a few body language signals and what they mean….

👄 lip lick - something so small so easily missed but can be a stress signal, if they haven’t just eaten then they are likely to be telling you they are uncomfortable

👀 Looking away indicating they are not enjoying whatever is happening at that moment, they are trying to disengage from it, may not be able to move away physically at that time

🐕 Slow relaxed tail wag = happy, low to tucked under wagging = worry and unsure, high very fast wag = over aroused, potentially conflicted and feelings of anxiety

🐶 CHEWING 🐶
🐾WHY….natural behaviour for dogs and highly rewarding and calming. It is a way in which they explore the world and is part of the predatory sequence.
🐾 PUPPIES…..just like babies, puppies go through a teething stage, they start losing their teeth around 12-16 weeks and the teething can last till around 6 months. During this time they will look for things to chew which will alleviate pain
🐾WHAT….long lasting natural chews are the best, examples of some good ones are beef tendons, pizzle sticks, rolled beef slices. There are so many fantastic options, do a pick and mix and see which your dog prefers
🛑AVOID…..rawhide and plastic chews that they can’t ingest
🛑NEGATIVE….Excessive chewing of unsuitable items can be a sign of anxiety / boredom / frustration. Particularly common with dogs who struggle with separation anxiety

Recalling a dog back can actually be quite negative, especially if it’s away from something fun but it doesn’t have to mean end of the fun and time to go back on lead. See how much more responsive your dog is when you introduce these different ways to reward and more fulfilled as you can tap into their breed specific instincts 🐾
