Very good post regarding the heat in the next few days xx

Last week I got confirmation that my little Buddy is definitely deaf.

As a dog trainer, I understand the behavioural and practical side of it but as Buddy's mum, it still hit me emotionally.

I wanted to share this because deaf dogs are often misunderstood and hearing loss in dogs can be easy to miss at first. Dogs are incredibly adaptable and they don't sit around grieving the loss of hearing the way you might imagine. They learn through visual consistency, trust, touch, visual communication, scent, routine and connection.

Because many dogs adapt so well to hearing loss, the signs of it happening can be subtle.

The signs I have noticed in Buddy are:

๐Ÿ”น๏ธNot responding to his name or familiar sounds
๐Ÿ”น๏ธSleeping more deeply and not waking at the sound of me coming home.
๐Ÿ”น๏ธGetting difficult to wake him
๐Ÿ”น๏ธStartling easily when touched unexpectedly
๐Ÿ”น๏ธBarking more often and more loudly than usual
๐Ÿ”น๏ธNo longer reacting to our doorbell, visitors, Fudge barking and other household noises
๐Ÿ”น๏ธBecoming more clingy and cuddly
๐Ÿ”น๏ธWatching other dogs more closely for cues and not realising they were approaching until very close by
๐Ÿ”น๏ธIgnoring recalls that he previously responded very consistently to
๐Ÿ”น๏ธNot reacting to his favourite words such as "treat", "nan and grandad" or "walkies".

Noticing these signs helped me to understand what was potentially happening but getting the confirmation last week has made me feel sad for whatโ€™s changing. However, heโ€™s still the same happy, loving little dog - we just need to learn a new way to communicate together.

If you have a deaf dog, here's a few things that can help:

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธVisual cues such as hand signals, facial expressions and body movements will become your new language
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธGentle, light touches and vibrations can replace verbal markers
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธSafety management becomes more important than ever - remaining observant on walks, staying close to them, longlines if they tend to wander, secure spaces, leads, and routine will help build confidence
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธAvoid startling them awake; approach within their line of sight when possible
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธA 'DEAF DOG' lead wrap or harness can help others understand their needs more
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธEnrichment, play, scent work and connection are still just as important!

If you are navigating this with your own dog, the important thing to know is that deafness is not the end of a happy, fulfilled life by any means! This isn't going to change the bond Buddy and I have - but it will change the way we communicate ๐Ÿ˜Š.

If you have experience with a deaf dog, Iโ€™d love to hear what helped you most.

It's been a snowy couple of days but not all dogs are built for the cold and while some thrive in chilly temperatures (such as Husky's) others really struggle to stay warm. I'm often asked by clients whether they think their dog needs a coat and given the recent snow, what better time to write some guidance on this ๐Ÿ˜€!

Toy breeds and dogs with short, thin or single layer coats (such as Greyhounds, Whippets, Staffies, Chihuahuas etc) lack the insulation needed to retain their body heat and unlike double coated breeds, they lose warmth quickly in cold weather. Dogs that have been recently groomed will also feel the cold more too!

Smaller dogs and very lean dogs have less body mass to conserve heat. Puppies, senior and elderly dogs also struggle more because they canโ€™t regulate their body temperature as efficiently.

Rain, wind and snow strip heat from the body quickly. Even dogs that normally tolerate cold may become uncomfortable or at risk when theyโ€™re wet or exposed for long periods.

Dogs with arthritis, injuries, compromised immune systems or conditions like hypothyroidism feel the cold more intensely. Cold temperatures can increase stiffness and pain, reducing mobility and comfort.

Jumpers and coats arenโ€™t about dressing dogs up, they should be about improving the comfort, health and welfare of a dog. A well fitted, weather appropriate coat can prevent shivering, stress, muscle tension and reluctance to move outdoors.

Both coats and jumpers can play an important role in keeping dogs warm but the best choice depends on weather conditions, activity level and your individual dog.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ ๐™…๐™ช๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ง๐™จ
Jumpers are ideal for dry, cold weather or for dogs that feel the chill indoors, at night or on walks. They provide insulation and help retain body heat, making them particularly useful for:
๐Ÿ”น Short-coated or lean breeds
๐Ÿ”น Senior or arthritic dogs
๐Ÿ”น Puppies
๐Ÿ”น Dogs with medical conditions
๐Ÿ”น Cold indoor environments

However, jumpers are not waterproof so they can become heavy, cold and uncomfortable in rain or snow.

๐Ÿ’ฆ ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™–๐™ฉ๐™จ
Coats are better suited to wet, windy or snowy conditions as a good quality coat helps protect dogs from the elements by combining insulation with a weatherproof outer layer. They are more beneficial for:
๐Ÿ”น Long or exposed walks
๐Ÿ”น Wet and windy weather
๐Ÿ”น Dogs prone to stiffness or pain in the cold
๐Ÿ”น Lean or small breeds in harsh conditions

Some coats also include fleece or thermal linings which offer the best of both worlds!

โ“๐™๐™๐™š ๐˜ฝ๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™Š๐™ฅ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ?
Many dogs benefit from having both and Buddy and Fudge have a little wardrobe of different jumpers and coats.

I think it's a good idea to have jumpers of different thickness for dry, chilly days or for wearing indoors (if necessary) and a coat for wet or extreme weather. Whichever you choose though, the way it fits is crucial. It should allow free movement and not rub and be effective in reducing heat loss.

Every dog is different though and if a jumper or coat helps your dog to stay warm, relaxed and confident during their winter walks, then itโ€™s a responsible choice and definitely not a silly one! Whichever you choose, jumper or coat, just make sure your dog is comfortable, relaxed and happy to wear it (you may need to help them get used to it through careful desensitisation training). ๐Ÿถ
