Recall… needs to be instant. Whatever method you use either name of the dog or a whistle they need to stop what they are doing and return to you immediately.

This little brown Mouse is trained on the whistle but I wanted to show you how I use his name too.

Constant talking to the dog, asking it questions (which he will never answer) can dilute your message when it comes to recall. Silence is a superpower!

Recall is not going past you and carrying on sniffing, they can look at you for their next move…or it could be the lead on. Recall should be sharp, it’s moving away from distraction (another dog) and ignoring anything else.

I don’t treat train so he is not coming back for food…he is coming back for his next command, eye contact and more fun.

Well done little boy. 🤎

And just like that….heel work.🤣

As Spaniel owners we know things don’t just happen overnight ! Training takes time and success if often backwards…we have to repeat, tweak and cement the skills before moving on to something else.

So if you are going through hell…keep going I promise if you stick at it, make little changes when necessary and be consistent…you will see the results of your hard work..

Practice makes progress 🐾🤎

Client walk done….With a little help from my little brown Mouse. 🤎

These two love to run and have fun….we have regular sitting stops for the Goldie to rest. He’s lovely and a pleasure to walk. 🐾

A bit of fun - the Labrador was walking by my side… so I wondered how much does he trusts me?

I know he trusts me when I give him directions, to come, to work for me and if I jump over something he does too.

So I covered his eyes gently, would he try and back away or would he walk with me and trust me?

See for yourself 👍🏻🐾🤣

Tis’ the season🦟🐜🕷️🦗 (can’t see an emoji for a tick) Remember to check your dog after walks especially if it’s been in long grass / fields.

I found this critter on one of the dog’s muzzles so easy to see. Check inside legs, around ears and body / tail.

I carry tick removers as part of my first aid kit. Easy to use hook the tick and twist…ensuring you get the head out. Ticks need to come off the dog immediately, and be aware of Lyme Disease.

Wear gloves if you have them and wash your hands afterwards. 🐾👍🏻

The whistle is one of my best pieces of kit…this is my stop whistle - my dog can sit though he often prefers to lay down each is fine…

It’s the staying put too which is also important until I release him to go.

This can be a life saver being able to stop your dog instantly…you can pop a lead on them and lead them away.

Well done Little Brown Mouse 🤎

Tennis balls are a versatile training aid…not just for throwing!

The Cockers here are hunting for a single tennis ball deep in the cover. It’s a hard find…? Not for noses that have over 100 million scent receptors.

It’s great fun, they are bred to hunt and flush so using their breed characteristics….and I get my ball back…win win! 🎾

And they came back tired 🐾👍🏻

Timing - is vital when training 👍🏻
Leave it command is much quicker and I get the result I am after.👍🏻. See previous video

Timing…. When training is important.

Does all my training always go to plan?…nope. And I am happy to show when it doesn’t.

Here the Springer has to wait whilst I put tennis balls in front of him, but he grabs them…my leave it command was too slow.

Spaniels think very fast they move very fast they make decisions very fast…in my experience.

So when training them you may need to take a look at you rather then the dog if things don’t go plan. 🐾👍🏻

After all a calm sea never made a skilful sailor…see next video ——>
