🐰🐇 Did you know today is international RABBIT day ? 🤍🤎🤍🤎

This day was founded in 1998 to celebrate wild and domestic rabbits, and to help protect and promote their welfare needs that can often be very misunderstood.

Meet Pancake, our receptionist Jess’ rabbit. We would love to see pics of yours, post in the comments below to help us celebrate all things bunnies!

🚨 TOXIN INGESTION ON WALKS – KNOW THE SIGNS! 🚨

Meet Oscar, our lovely Springer Spaniel, who recently had a frightening experience after picking up something he shouldn’t have while out on a walk. 🐶🌿

Thankfully, Oscar’s owners were quick to notice that something wasn’t right. They recognised his symptoms and brought him straight into Redcar Vets, allowing us to assess him and start treatment promptly. ❤️

🐾 Why can toxin ingestion be so dangerous?

Dogs are naturally curious and can sniff, lick or eat things they find while out exploring. Unfortunately, some substances can be extremely harmful – and you may not always know exactly what your pet has eaten.

Potential dangers found outdoors can include:
🍄 Toxic mushrooms
🌱 Certain plants and bulbs
🧪 Garden chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers
🧂 Slug and snail bait
🍫 Dropped food containing chocolate or other toxic ingredients
💊 Discarded medications
🚗 Antifreeze and other vehicle fluids
🗑️ Unknown substances or rubbish

⚠️ Know the warning signs

Depending on the toxin involved, symptoms can include:

• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Excessive drooling
• Tremors or shaking
• Wobbliness or difficulty walking
• Lethargy or unusual behaviour
• Panting or changes in breathing
• Seizures
• Collapse

If you think your pet has eaten something potentially toxic, don't wait for symptoms to become severe. Contact your vet immediately. Early veterinary intervention can make a huge difference.

If possible, take a photo or sample of what your pet may have eaten, or bring the packaging if you know what the substance was. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless specifically instructed to do so by a veterinary professional.

Thankfully, thanks to his owners' quick actions, Oscar received the treatment he needed and was on the road to recovery. 🥰🐾

💗 At Redcar Vets, we’re here to help if you’re ever worried that your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t.
