πŸ’šπŸ–€ MEET THE TEAM πŸ–€πŸ’š

Meet Maizie our Equine VCA! Alongside working at Clevedale, she also offers freelance riding for people throughout the week. She has a super busy life juggling family, her 2 children Florence & Reggie, aswell as competing her own horses. Maizie has a huge passion for horses and has been lucky enough to work with them all the time.

Since leaving school, Maizie worked in racing which gave her a big soft spot for thoroughbreds and she has had 4 of her own to retrain over the years including her 2 boys now Maverick and Sunny, who she events and has great success doing so. Aswell as her 2 competition boys she also had the pleasure of breeding her own mare who she broke in this year and is enjoying her progress so far.

In her spare time (which is rare!) Maizie enjoys horse free days out with her family and watching / grooming for her daughter and her ponies on their fantastic adventures. πŸ’šπŸ–€

πŸ’šπŸ–€ CUSHING'S DISEASE (PPID) πŸ–€πŸ’š

Cushing's is a common disease particularly in older horses and can increase a horse's laminitis risk. Early signs of Cushing's can include:
⚠️ Long, dull coat that they struggle to shed
⚠️ Unexplained weight loss
⚠️ More frequent urination and increased drinking
⚠️ Lethargy and sweating more frequently without exercise

🩸The ACTH blood test is the only way to diagnose Cushing's disease. ACTH levels naturally fluctuate throughout the year, especially in Summer and Autumn, however horses can show signs year round.

🩸 The best time to test is Autumn and throughout September & October, Care about Cushing's offer testing for a reduced fee to patients who haven't been tested before. If you have any concerns about your horse, now is the time to test! For advice from one of our experienced vets or to get booked in for a blood sample, contact the practice ☎️ 01287 623802

πŸ’šπŸ–€ ATYPICAL MYOPATHY πŸ–€πŸ’š

πŸ‚ With the change in weather and the leaves starting to fall, cases of Atypical Myopathy can increase in horses and ponies as the sycamore seeds, seedlings and leaves fall onto grazing pastures. Please be vigilant and check your paddocks and surrounding paddocks for any sycamore trees as we head into Autumn.

⚠ Atypical Myopathy is a serious and often life threatening muscle disease which can be more prevalent during damp, windy Autumn weather. Signs to look out for include:
🍁 Dark Urine
🍁 Sweating without exercise or lethargy
🍁 Reluctance to move or lie down
🍁 Sudden muscle stiffness or weakness

You can also reduce the risk by:
🍁 Checking for and removing sycamore seeds from grazing
🍁 Restricting access to affected paddocks during high - risk periods
🍁 Provide alternative forage

If you have any concerns, or would like to speak to one of our experienced vets about management this Autumn and Winter, contact the practice on ☎️ 01287 623802
