IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING PET TRAVEL TO EUROPE
We are writing to inform you of an important update to travelling your pets to the EU. From Wednesday 22nd April 2026 new rules have come into effect regarding how GB residents can travel to the EU with their pets. Please note you can still travel to the EU with your pets but there has been some changes so we would advise that you check the latest guidance (please see link below)
Key updates include:
➔ GB residents can no longer travel to the EU using an EU Pet Passport. EU pet passports may now only be issued to those people whose main home address is in the EU. For those of you that have had an EU pet passport issued, this is no longer valid for travel out of the UK.
➔ AHCs are valid for longer. Once issued the AHC can now be used for onward EU travel and return to the UK for 6 months, provided that you pets Rabies vaccination remains in date.
➔ If someone other than the owner is travelling with a pet written permission is required from the owner, the owner must also be travelling within 5 days of their pet.
➔ New limit on how many pets per private car. A new limit of 5 pets per private car (rather than 5 per person) now applies. There are some exemptions, for example competitions, but specific criteria must be met. If you are travelling on foot the 5 pet per person rule still applies.
Please note that there is no major changes to pet travel requirements for re-entry into Great Britain.
Planning your trip away.
Please give the practice as much notice as possible if you are planning to go away to ensure that we can get the relevant paperwork in place for you, especially at peak times such as Easter, summer holidays and Christmas.
As individual member states may have different requirements regarding pet travel (e.g. working requirements) the APHA advises that you always check the travel requirements for your destination prior to travel.
We understand that some clients will find the updates inconvenient but the APHA has assured owners that taking their pets to the EU is still very much possible, they just need the correct paperwork to do so.
