When it comes to minerals, more is not always better. 👀

Zinc, copper, selenium & co. do not work in isolation.
They interact with each other — which is why balance matters so much.

Too much of one mineral can affect how other nutrients are utilised. At the same time, the body depends on minerals and trace elements working together in the right proportions. 🌿

That is why choosing a mineral feed is not just about picking the one with the highest levels. It should suit your horse’s overall ration and individual needs.

Because higher amounts do not automatically mean better balance.

It’s even possible to regain concavity on a shire horse with nearly a ton of weight coming down the front legs.
I’ve been trimming this shire for the last 6 months, the green arrow shows the change in dorsal wall angle. These hooves have literally ‘sucked’ back up lifting the sole off the floor and giving a nice tight white line junction.
I now have about an inch of hoof wall to grow out, then provided he is kept trimmed regularly he should have good functional hooves without the need for shoes for riding.

New horse today, looking forward to seeing these hooves improve over time. There is some nice hooves hiding there.
Good species appropriate nutrition and minerals in the correct format, along with regular trim cycle and these hooves will be strong and functional. These hooves are work in progress.

Leading on from yesterdays post on concavity! This is my shire who I’ve been trimming since October. As a 3 year old and 18hh, he had incredibly flat hooves because of the amount of weight coming down those front legs - the hooves very easily go splat.
Looking at all the X-rays to coffin joint issues shire owners have kindly forwarded to me, flat hooves seem to be a common problem with shires and heavy draughts.
As you can see in the picture I have managed to start to address the concavity in these hooves and get better angles for a more functional hoof. The better angles and concavity will aid the shock absorbency in these hooves and therefore protect the coffin joint amongst other bones and soft tissues.
You will notice the bruising in the hoof which is now at the floor this will have originated 9ish months ago when that wall was being produced at the coronary corium due to the widening of the hooves.
I’m not sure I have the most desired shires hooves but we have to ask ourselves should shires hooves really be that big?

A real positive today from a client who was just as pleased as I was to see that great concavity is coming back to this horses hooves, you can see the depth of concavity from the perfectly formed hoof print in the picture. This horse was previously flat footed.
I’ve trimmed this horse maybe 4-5 trims, she was lame when I started with a diagnosis of some inflammation within the hoof capsule.
After trimming and checking this horse over today we have finally decided today is the day to start getting back onboard.
These hooves have changed dramatically since I started trimming and I look forward to the picture of the client back onboard again for the first time.
