XL Bully Ban Information
The government has announced that the XL Bully breed ban will go ahead in 2024. We know that this will be upsetting and confusing for a lot of people so here is some of the key information to be aware of. From 31 December 2023 it will be against the law to:
- sell an XL Bully dog
- abandon an XL Bully dog
- give away an XL Bully dog
- breed from an XL Bully dog
- have an XL Bully in public without a lead and muzzle
From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales unless you have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog.
To keep your XL Bully, you will need to apply for a Certificate of Exemption and your dog must be neutered, microchipped, on lead and muzzled in public. You will need to take out insurance via the Dogs Trust against your dog injuring people.
Neutering
If your XL Bully is less than 1 year old on 31st January 2024, they must be neutered by 31st December 2024.
If your dog is older than 1 year old on 31st January 2024, they must be neutered by 30th June 2024.
Key dates to be aware of:

31st December 2023 - XL Bully dogs must wear a muzzle and be on lead in public. It is illegal to re-home, sell, buy or breed an XL Bully from this date.

31st January 2024 - deadline for applying for a certificate of exemption

1st February 2024 - it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully without a certificate of exemption

30th June 2024 - XL Bullies that are more than 1 year old on 31st January need to be neutered by this date

31st December 2024 - XL Bullies that are less than 1 year old on 31st January need to be neutered by this date
