🐝☀️ Summer adventures can come with unexpected hazards for our pets. 🌿

During the warmer months, insect stings become much more common. While some cause only mild discomfort, others can trigger severe allergic reactions that require immediate veterinary care.

Our lovely patient Xena recently came to us after a bee sting caused significant facial swelling and hives. Thankfully, she received prompt treatment and recovered well. ❤️

Despite her dramatic “new look,” Xena never lost her cheerful spirit! She was still delighted to see us, wagging her tail, making friends with the other dogs, and reminding everyone that a positive attitude goes a long way. 🐶💛

⚠️ Watch for these warning signs after an insect sting:

• Sudden swelling, especially around the face or muzzle
• Hives or raised bumps on the skin
• Difficulty breathing
• Excessive drooling
• Weakness, collapse, or vomiting

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait—contact your veterinarian immediately. Early treatment can make all the difference.

We hope you have a wonderful and safe summer with your furry companions. And thank you, Xena, for reminding us that even on a difficult day, a wagging tail can brighten everyone’s day! 💚🐾

🐾 Summer Walks Can Hide Unexpected Dangers ☀️🌿

Meet Otto, an adventurous pup who recently came to Dafne Veterinary Hospital after finding something he shouldn’t during a walk.

After returning home, Otto became wobbly, unusually quiet and “spaced out,” and was unable to control his bladder. Naturally, his owners were very worried and brought him straight to us.

Following a full clinical examination and blood tests to rule out other causes, we suspected cannabis intoxication after he had ingested discarded cannabis joints during his walk.

Otto was treated by:
💉 Inducing vomiting to remove any remaining material from his stomach.
💧 Placing him on intravenous fluids (a drip) for supportive care.
🥛 Administering intravenous intralipid therapy, which can help reduce the effects of certain toxins, including cannabis.

The good news? After a few hours of treatment and close monitoring, Otto was back to his bright, happy self! 🥰

⚠️ A reminder for all pet owners this summer:

Unfortunately, warmer weather means more litter in parks and public spaces, including discarded cannabis joints, food waste, alcohol, BBQ leftovers, and other potentially toxic items. Dogs explore the world with their noses and mouths, and even a small amount of cannabis can make them seriously unwell.

If your pet suddenly becomes:
• Wobbly or uncoordinated
• Sleepy or unusually quiet
• Disorientated or “spaced out”
• Unable to control their bladder
• Vomiting or showing other unusual behaviour

📞 Contact your vet immediately. Early treatment can make a significant difference.

Please help us keep our four-legged friends safe by disposing of litter responsibly and keeping a close eye on curious noses during walks. ❤️🐶

🪾A stick is not a safe toy for dogs 🪾

We all love seeing our dogs happily carrying or chasing sticks, but unfortunately they can cause devastating injuries.

Recently, our emergency team treated lovely Goose, a Golden Retriever, after a stick caused a large tear in the back of his throat. The injury resulted in significant bleeding and a persistent cough, and could have become life-threatening without prompt treatment.

Late that night, our team took Goose to surgery under general anaesthetic, where we carefully repaired the wound by closing the tear. We’re delighted to say that Goose made a fantastic recovery and was back to his happy self very quickly.

This is an important reminder that sticks can splinter, puncture the mouth and throat, and cause serious internal injuries. If your dog develops bleeding from the mouth, coughing, difficulty swallowing, excessive drooling, or seems distressed after playing with a stick, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Instead of sticks, choose safer fetch toys that are designed for dogs.

We’re so pleased to have helped Goose get back on his paws. ❤️

☀️💧 Summer Heat = Higher Risk of Dehydration

Over the past few weeks, we’ve treated an unusually high number of dogs with haemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). Many arrived with severe dehydration that required urgent veterinary care.

While the exact cause of HGE isn’t always known, hot weather and dehydration can make it much harder for affected dogs to cope. HGE can become life-threatening very quickly.

🚨 Watch for these warning signs:
• Sudden vomiting
• Bloody diarrhoea (or diarrhoea that becomes bloody)
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Excessive panting or signs of dehydration (dry gums, sunken eyes)

💦 Help keep your dog hydrated this summer:
🐾 Always provide fresh, cool water.
🐾 Bring water with you on walks and outings.
🐾 Avoid exercise during the hottest part of the day.
🐾 Make sure your pet has access to shade and a cool place to rest.
🐾 Contact your veterinarian promptly if your dog develops vomiting or diarrhoea—don’t wait for it to „settle on its own.”

Early treatment can make all the difference. If your dog is showing any of these signs, please seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.

Stay safe, stay cool, and let’s keep our pets healthy this summer. ❤️🐶

🐶💨 Meet Cub – our mischievous little speedster who decided that stones and a piece of a silicone toy looked like a tasty snack!

Cub was brought to Dafne Vets after developing severe vomiting. After a thorough examination and rapid diagnostics, we discovered that the foreign objects had caused an intestinal obstruction – a serious condition that requires urgent treatment.
Thanks to a quick diagnosis and prompt surgery, we were able to remove the stones and silicone piece before they caused further complications. 🏥✨
We’re delighted to report that Cub made a fantastic recovery and is now back to his energetic, dashing self, keeping his family on their toes once again! ❤️

A reminder to all pet owners: puppies explore the world with their mouths, and even seemingly harmless objects can cause life-threatening blockages. If your pet is vomiting repeatedly, seems uncomfortable, or you suspect they may have swallowed something they shouldn’t, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.
