Let’s talk about the incredible logic behind some UK dog shelters refusing to work with balanced trainers.

Because apparently…
✨ A little leash pressure is abusive,
but
✨ Euthanising dogs for “behavioural issues” is compassion.
Make it make sense 🤷‍♀️🐾

Here are the REAL numbers:

🔹 In UK shelters, 64% of dogs euthanised are put down because of behavioural problems,
(University of Lincoln – Jerry Green Rescue data)

🔹 Across UK rehoming centres, 65.6% of euthanasia cases are for behaviour,
(Behaviour research in rehoming centres)

🔹 Behaviour is one of the strongest predictors of death in young dogs. In dogs under 3, 33.7% die because of “undesirable behaviours,” and 76% of those deaths are euthanasia,
(VetCompass / RVC)

So let’s recap,
A dog pulls, lunges, or reacts = “We must protect them from any trainer who uses corrections,”
→ Ends up deteriorating in a kennel,
→ Gets labelled “unrehomable,”
→ Gets euthanised for the very behaviour no one was allowed to address.

But hey… at least no one used a prong collar, right?
👏 Welfare victory! 👏

Meanwhile, balanced trainers, who use food, praise, structure, AND humane corrections, help thousands of dogs every year overcome the exact issues shelters are killing dogs for.

But shelters proudly say things like,
🚫 “We don’t work with balanced trainers,”
🚫 “No tools,”
🚫 “Positive-only or nothing.”

And guess what,
For too many dogs… it’s nothing.

Because nothing is exactly what gets done before they’re put down.

The irony,
Balanced trainers are called “inhumane,” yet shelters are literally euthanising dogs for behaviours that could have been modified.

Imagine choosing,
❌ death,
over
❌ a moment of leash pressure to stop dangerous behaviour.

If shelters truly want to “protect dogs from harm,” maybe, just MAYBE, killing them shouldn’t be Plan B because Plan A doesn’t allow any tools or techniques outside a single ideology.

Dogs don’t need politics,
They need training that actually keeps them alive.

Some shelters need to decide,
Are they in the business of saving dogs,
or protecting their philosophy?

Because right now,
The stats are showing exactly who’s paying the price.
