PSA: high arousal = reduced pain perception. There are dogs out there who would run after a ball until their feet bled.

Your dog’s behaviour in low arousal/ excitement situations are much more indicative of pain because their body isn’t being flooded with pain inhibiting chemicals. Pay attention to the whispers so they don’t have to shout.

Smaller problems have easier solutions!

A nervous system in over drive can make even simple tasks unbearable.

Activating his parasympathetic system to help bring him out of his defensive state means his poor body can finally relax.

Im so proud of how well he can work through things, he has forgiven every mistake I’ve ever made 🤎

‘They wouldn’t do it if it hurt them’ is absolutely a myth but spotting the signs that they’re starting to struggle isn’t always easy in the moment.

Since we’ve been given the go ahead to restart exercise therapy by his neurologist I have been filming sessions to analyse after (I can feel an upgrade in cloud storage coming 💸).

Watching this back I can see some really clear behaviours that indicate discomfort despite Remi having a well established ’opt out’ behaviour.

There are some dogs (especially working breeds) who are so driven to please that they will ignore significant discomfort to continue. I’m working hard to train my eye better so I can stop the session earlier and hopefully avoid any exercise related pain.

It’s not easy though, the boy loves to work!

Preventing Remi’s pain (and his associated pain behaviours is my main concern).

If you’re worried about side effects speak to your vet (not people selling supplements and profiting while your dog suffers).

Tethered cord syndrome is a difficult condition to diagnose so the journey if often a bit meandering.

If you have symptoms you’re concerned about please go to your vet. It probably isn’t TCS but many conditions go unnoticed in young dogs. The sooner you identify the problem the sooner you can start treatment!

Sharing this to raise awareness and help others in a similar situation.
This is not normal adolescent behaviour, he wasn’t ’just being a teenager’.
If in doubt get them checked out, trust your gut!
