Monty the English Springer Spaniel puppy is absolutely stunning, and at less than 6 months old he’s already over 20kg! He took his first grooming introduction completely in his stride, in fact he seemed to quite enjoy it.

I noticed this happen quite a few times last year- it got to October and people started asking for their dogs’ coat to be left longer, or to go longer between appointments “because it’s going to start getting cold”. In fact what happened was that by the time the next groom came around in December, and it actually was cold, the dog was matted and had to be shaved shorter than ever.

Most people have central heating in their homes so dogs absolutely won’t feel the cold at home. Out on walks they are moving and active so are unlikely to get cold, unless they are stood around for a long time. It is actually better to keep them reasonably short over winter when they are going on wet and muddy walks. It makes them easier to rinse, they dry quicker and they are less likely to become knotty or matted.

If you are unsure just ask me at your next appointment and we can discuss it 🙂.

I’ve seen loads of dogs this last few weeks that have had hotspots. Dogs that I’ve groomed for years and have never had them before. I can only think it’s to do with the hot dry weather over the summer, followed by warm wet weather, but I’m just guessing. I’m happy to groom dogs with hotspots as long as they’re not too sore or infected. If in doubt, check with your vet.
