Fun Fact Friday 👃🐾

Your dog has around 300 million scent receptors. You have about 6 million.

That's why the sniff IS the walk for them. Letting them sniff (on your terms) is brain work, and a sniffy walk can tire a dog out more than a fast one.

Does your dog get sniff time on walks? 👇

3 things I watch when a dog steps out for a walk 👀🐾

1️⃣ Are they checking in with you, or are they already gone?
2️⃣ What do they do when something exciting appears?
3️⃣ The one nobody expects: can they stop and do nothing?

That last one tells me more than almost anything else. Stay stubborn. Stubbornness is key 💜

Which one does your dog find hardest? 👇

🏆 We won! 🐾

We're thrilled to share that Phoenix Dog Handlers has been named Dog Training Service of the Year (East Lothian) at the Scotland Prestige Awards 2026/27! A huge thank you to Prestige Awards for this recognition.

We're so grateful for this. It's lovely to see the work being recognised, but the real reward has always been the dogs. Every nervous pup who found their confidence, every reactive dog who learned to stay calm through our behaviour work, and every flyball dog who discovered how much fun teamwork can be: those are the moments that keep us going. This award belongs to all of them.

A huge thank you to every handler who has trained with us. You listened, you put the work in at home, and you kept going on the tough days when progress felt slow. Training only works when you carry it through, and you did. Your dogs are proof of that, and we couldn't be prouder of you.

Thank you to our amazing team for your support and hard work, from behaviour sessions to flyball practice and everything in between. And thank you to everyone who has recommended us, shared our posts or cheered us on. It means more than you know.

Here's to many more happy dogs and happy handlers. ❤️

Ever wondered what training with me actually looks like? 🐾

1️⃣ A 45-minute consultation in your home. I meet your dog and explain WHY they do what they do
2️⃣ A plan for you AND your dog: rewards, fair consequences and loads of play
3️⃣ Weekly or fortnightly sessions. Long enough to practise, not long enough to forget
4️⃣ Stay stubborn. Stubbornness is key. Consistency is what changes behaviour

Force-free, balanced, old-school… we all want the same thing 💜

The dog training world loves an argument. But every approach gets something right:
✨ Force-free trainers are brilliant at motivation and timing
✨ Traditional trainers are great at real, everyday life

I train balanced: rewards, fair consequences and loads of play. That's what works for me, my dogs and my clients.

Less arguing, more helping dogs. Stay stubborn.

What's the best training tip you've learned from someone who trains differently to you? 👇

Meet Oban 🐾

Before flyball, she was "high as a kite": loads of energy and nowhere to put it. Then flyball gave her a job.

"Her two favourite things: being told what to do and running really fast. I think she loves it even more than I do." (Richard, Oban's human 💜)

High-energy dogs don't need less energy. They need direction.
