🐶 Are you accidentally teaching your puppy to bite you?

When you buy your puppy a squeaky toy, what happens when they bite it?

IT SQUEAKS! 😂

Now think about this . . . what happens when your puppy bites YOU and you squeal, yelp or make a high-pitched noise?

Yep. You’ve just become a giant, interactive squeaky toy! 🤦‍♀️

And if you think about it, squeaking is also associated with prey animals when they're caught. Personally, I remove the squeakers from my dogs' toys because I don't want to encourage that particular association.

So, what do I do when my puppy wants to bite and chew?

I give them something appropriate to chew!

🐾 Coffee wood chews
🐾 Suitable raw bones
🐾 Pizzles
🐾 Frozen carrots
🐾 Frozen stuffed Kongs

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, and teething can make chewing particularly appealing.

Our job isn't to tell them off for being puppies. It's to guide them towards appropriate outlets and help them learn what they *can* bite.

Choose suitable chews for your individual dog, supervise chewing, and avoid anything that could cause choking, tooth damage or injury.

Be mindful of what you reinforce, give your puppy appropriate alternatives, and help them succeed.

Sometimes, common sense in dog training starts with asking ourselves: what am I actually teaching my puppy? 😉

RECALL SERIES - Day 5
This is what walking a dog SHOULD look like!!

A great recall doesn't mean your dog never leaves you.
It means they know they can go — and they know how to come back. ❤️

🎆 fireworks prep is already on my radar . . . . . is it on yours? 🎆

This week alone, I’ve been asked TWICE about preparing dogs for fireworks and I LOVE that! ❤️

Why? Because those owners are being proactive. They understand that some dogs really struggle with loud noises, and they’re getting prepared BEFORE the scary stuff starts.

Let’s be realistic . . . . . depending on where you live, there WILL be fireworks around Bonfire Night, especially over the weekend closest to it.

And trust me, if you have a noise-sensitive dog, it can be heartbreaking to watch them struggle. 😢

A couple of my own oldies are super sensitive to fireworks, and whilst planning ahead helps us manage the random bangs and occasional fireworks, the main weekend, when they seem to go on relentlessly, can still leave them in an absolute state.

💜 It’s always better to be prepared and not need everything than to be unprepared and watch your dog suffer.

You might not be able to prevent every bang, but you CAN take steps now to help your dog feel safer and make things more manageable.

🐾 RECALL SERIES — DAY 3: DON'T POISON YOUR RECALL!

Okay… confession time 😂

This is Hollie and Sprocket in the PTD training field - And if you watch carefully, you'll see something really useful . . . . .

Hollie doesn't come on my first recall 👀

So what do I do?

I don't stand there shouting: “HOLLIE! COME! COME! COME! COME! COME!!!” 🤬😂

Because every time we repeat a cue that the dog is choosing to ignore, we risk teaching them that…

“Come” doesn't actually mean I need to do anything straight away!!

Instead, I change what I'm doing -

I give her another opportunity to respond.
I use a different recall.
I make myself relevant again.

And eventually . . . . HERE SHE COMES! ❤️

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see with recall training.

People say the cue once - The dog doesn't come!

So they say it again . . . . . And again . . . . And again!!

And eventually the dog wanders over . . . and we think:
“Great! They came when I called!”

But what the dog may actually have learned is:
“I don't need to respond until they've said it about six times.” 🤣

So what should you do if your dog doesn't come?

DON'T just keep repeating the same cue!!
Instead:

👉 If you're practising, make the exercise easier.
👉 Get closer to your dog.
👉 Change your body language.
👉 Use movement to encourage them towards you.
👉 Use a long line when appropriate.
👉 And most importantly, think about WHY they didn't respond.

Was the distraction too difficult?
Was the distance too great?
Were they too interested in something else?
Were you asking for more than they've been trained for?

Because the answer is NEVER - “My dog is being stubborn.”

Usually the answer is simply:

I made the job too hard!

And here's the really important bit . . . Don't save your recall cue for when you NEED it!!

Practise it when you know your dog can succeed.
Build the habit.
Build the value.
Build the response.
Then gradually make life harder.

Because a recall cue should mean: “This matters. Turn around and come!”

Not:

“I'll come when Dawn has shouted it enough times.” 😂

And yes . . . Hollie did eventually respond 😉 though I think some of it is that she is going a little deaf now in her old age too!

That's real-life recall training - not perfectly choreographed training videos where the dog magically comes every single time! ❤️🐾

🐾 RECALL SERIES — DAY 2: MAKE COMING BACK FUN! 🎉

If you want a dog who comes flying back when you call . . . . you need to make coming back to you the best bit! 😍

One of the easiest ways to start building recall is to stop thinking about the come part and start thinking about the FUN part.

Try this:
👣 Move away from your dog.
👀 Get their attention.
🎉 Make yourself exciting — use your happy voice, clap your hands, crouch down, run backwards or even make a silly noise!
🏃♀️ As your dog comes towards you, keep encouraging them.
💥 And when they get to you… CELEBRATE!

Food.
Tug.
A toy.
A chase game.
A big fuss.
Whatever YOUR dog thinks is brilliant!

Then . . . . . LET THEM GO AGAIN! 🥳

This last bit is really important.

Your dog learns:
Coming back doesn't mean the fun stops!!

It actually means . . . . Coming back makes fun happen!

And you don't need to wait until you're out on a massive walk to practise . . . .

Do it in the garden
In the house
On a quiet walk
With a long line
During play

Build hundreds of easy, successful repetitions before you expect your dog to recall away from something incredibly exciting.

And remember…

👉 Don't call your dog over and over.
👉 Don't call them when you already know they won't come.
👉 Don't make every recall mean “right, we're going home!”

Build the habit you want.

Because the goal isn't to have a dog who comes back because you've shouted loud enough - It's to have a dog who hears your recall and thinks:

YES!! What are we doing?! 😍
That's the recall I want. ❤️🐾
