❤️ **I DON'T WANT YOU TO HAVE A “GOOD” DOG.**

I want you to have a dog you're genuinely **proud to live your life with.**

A dog who understands you.
A dog who wants to engage with you.
A dog who can cope when things don't go their way.
A dog who can settle when you need them to.
A dog who can enjoy freedom because you've built the skills to handle it.

And yes…

A dog who can do some bloody brilliant tricks too. 😂🐩

That's why our Puppy & Foundations training isn't about creating a dog who can perform a list of commands.

It's about building the **relationship and communication underneath those behaviours.**

Because the sit isn't really the important bit.

The important bit is:

Can your dog understand you?
Can you understand your dog?
Can you work together?

That's what I want for every dog and owner who comes through the doors at Preston Trick Dogs. ❤️

🤔 DOES YOUR DOG ACTUALLY KNOW THAT BEHAVIOUR?

This is one of the biggest training traps I see.

You teach your dog to sit beautifully in the kitchen.
Then you go outside…

“Sit.” Nothing!!
“Sit.” Still nothing!!
“SIT!” And suddenly we're declaring that the dog is stubborn. 😂

But here's the thing . . . Your dog may genuinely not understand that “sit” means the same thing everywhere

Dogs don't automatically generalise behaviours in the way humans do.

Kitchen ≠ garden.
Garden ≠ training class.
Training class ≠ busy high street.
Quiet room ≠ exciting competition environment.

Every time you change the environment, distractions, distance, duration or difficulty, you're potentially making the behaviour harder.

So instead of jumping from: 🐶 “He can do it at home”

to 🌎 “Now do it in the middle of the world!”

…build the steps in between

Make it easy.
Reward success.
Gradually increase the difficulty.
And give your dog a chance to **understand the game you're playing.**

That's training!!

🐩 MEET THE PTD TEAM…

Because apparently running a dog training business wasn't enough.

I decided having 10 dogs would be a sensible idea. 🤦🏼♀️😂

Today's team member is **Breeze**

Unless you have a reactive dog you may not have meet Breezey, though you have probably heard about her in classes!
She came to live with the PTD Crew way back in September 2013 and brought the number of dogs I owned up to THREE!!
She has the softest ears, like they are made of velvet!!

But here's something you might not know about Breeze…

She is my little Romanian rescue, with a stare 👀 that can melt even the most scary German Shepherd!

And this is one of the reasons I love training dogs so much.

Every dog is different.
Different motivations.
Different personalities.
Different strengths.
Different things they find difficult.

And that's exactly why I don't believe in a “one size fits all” approach to dog training.

You have to learn **your dog**.

What makes them tick.
What makes them light up.
What helps them understand.
And, occasionally, what makes them completely lose the plot. 😂

I'll be introducing more of the PTD team over the coming weeks…

🐶 YOUR DOG ISN'T STUBBORN!!

I know . . . . . controversial start to September! 😂

But honestly, “he's stubborn” is one of the things I hear most often from dog owners.

“My dog knows it… he just won't do it.”
And sometimes, what looks like stubbornness is actually something completely different.

It could be that:

🐾 They don't fully understand what you're asking
🐾 They know the behaviour at home, but not in a distracting environment
🐾 The reward you're offering isn't valuable enough in that moment
🐾 You've made the behaviour harder without realising it
🐾 They've learned that ignoring you sometimes works perfectly well!

And here's the important bit . . . .

Dogs don't generally wake up thinking, “Today I'm going to be bloody awkward.” 😂

They're making decisions based on what they understand, what they've learned and what's happening around them.

So rather than asking:

❌ “Why won't my dog listen?”

Try asking: 👉 “What have I taught my dog to do in this situation?”

That little change in question can completely change the way you train!!
And if your dog is struggling, going back a step isn't failure - It's good training. ❤️
