Lora’s catch of the day! 🎣🥔

…one rather impressive piece of fodder beet, retrieved from a heifer’s throat after it became lodged in her oesophagus.

Fodder beet is a great energy source for cattle, but large pieces in the diet can cause a choking risk.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
• Drooling
• Bloating
• Neck stretching / repeated swallowing
• Coughing or gagging
• regurgitation

A blockage can quickly become an emergency, so prompt veterinary attention is important.❗️

Thankfully this heifer made a full recovery—though we suspect she might chew her dinner a bit more carefully from now on! 😅

⚠️Watch out for hitchhikers!⚠️
(Otherwise known as ticks!) 🕷️

Recently our vets have seen an increase in tick borne fever and tick pyaemia in sheep.

🔹 Tick bourne fever - causes high temperatures, loss of appetite, dullness and reduced immunity which can lead to other diseases like pasturella.

🔸 Tick pyaemia - often follows tick borne fever and is most commonly seen in lambs, presenting as ill thrift, lameness, swollen joints, abscesses and death.

Whilst tick borne diseases are most commonly seen in the upland fells where the vegetation provides an ideal habitat for ticks, we have seen tick borne disease spreading to new areas over the past couple of years.

Having teaser tups can help tighten lambing windows by bringing your ewes into heat over a shorter period of time. This can help with management over lambing time and throughout the critical points of the year. Ram lambs can be done from around 5 months of age and can be a worthwhile asset to your flock.
