Welcome Liv! 🤩👋

You may have met Liv Gorst whilst visiting us on a Saturday but over the past few weeks she’s been swapping the front desk for vet tech duties!

A farmer’s daughter with plenty of hands-on experience, Liv’s no stranger to getting stuck in — and as a keen hockey player, she’s certainly used to chasing things around a field! 🐑🐄

Liv is a qualified RVN and we’re so proud to have her on our team! 💙

It turns out - the lungs don’t lie! 🫁

Last week our vets had a training session with MSD Animal Health on thoracic ultrasound scanning.

Scanning the lungs of calves allows us to score lung lesions and diagnose disease that may go unnoticed. It provides an objective way to assess respiratory health across a group of calves. 🐮

We can use lung scanning to:
☑️ Assess the performance of a system over time
☑️ See how different management changes affect calf health
☑️ Make treatment and management decisions for individual animals
☑️ Help maximise long term productivity

Remember that lung lesions can’t be detected just by looking at the calf but they will have a lasting impact on your animals health and performance. 📉

📊 We always say “what gets measured gets managed” and lung scanning is a brilliant way to track progress! 📈

Ever wondered if your teat dip is up to scratch? Or if you’re using the correct chemicals for your farm? 🥼
Well now you know who to ask! 🤓

Yesterday Tash, Liv and Helen had a tour of the Evans Vanodine factory near Preston where many disinfectants, detergents, dairy hygiene products and teat dips are manufactured.

The team learnt which detergent or disinfectant to use in different scenarios, dilution rates, kill times and correct use. As well as learning all about the science of teat dips. 🧪

Thankyou to Evans Vanodine and Farm Vet Network for a really informative trip!

“Let’s twist again” 🐮

But this time, it was a bit different!

Tash was called to a Holstein cow that wasn’t progressing with calving. On vaginal examination, the cervix was closed, but a re**al examination revealed a rare pre-cervical uterine twist.

A healthy Blue bull calf was successfully delivered by caesarean section — and what a whopper he was! 🤩

Another great example of proactive farmers making the right call at the right time and getting the vet involved when things weren’t progressing as expected.

A successful outcome for both cow and calf! 👏

💡Vet tip: A pre-cervical twist can be particularly tricky to diagnose because, unlike a usual twisted uterus, the cervix may feel normal on vaginal examination. A re**al exam can be key to finding the problem!

For calves with diarrhoea oral fluids are the most important part of their treatment. We always recommend feeding a high quality electrolyte in addition to regular milk feeds to replace ongoing fluids and electrolyte losses, buffer any metabolic acidosis and help the gut mucosa to recover.

A successful Simmental sunday! 🐮🙌

Olive the pedigree Simmental needed some weekend assistance from vet Lora to deliver this whopper bull calf this morning. 🤩

A prompt call from some observant farmers meant a successful outcome all round! 🤝
