🐍 Trimeresurus insularis — Komodo Island 🐍

One of Indonesia’s most iconic pit vipers, Trimeresurus insularis is a stunning arboreal species found across several Indonesian islands, including Komodo Island.

Known for their incredible colour variation, they can range from vibrant blue to green and yellow, with their striking appearance making them a real standout among Asian pit vipers.

As an arboreal ambush predator, they spend much of their time off the ground, using their prehensile tail and heat-sensing pits to help locate prey.

A truly spectacular species and a fantastic example of the diversity found throughout the Indonesian islands. 🌿🐍

SUPER DWARF RETICULATED PYTHONS 🐍

One seriously impressive combination of colour, genetics and locality! This Snow SD is a mutation and combination of Albino + Anery, producing that striking near-white appearance with soft yellow/pink tones.

But what exactly does “Super Dwarf” mean? 🤔

With reticulated pythons, Dwarf and Super Dwarf refer to locality genetics, not a single genetic mutation. Certain island populations naturally mature at significantly smaller sizes than mainland retics.

Some recognised examples include:

Super Dwarf localities: Kalatoa, Madu, Karompa and Kayuadi

Dwarf localities: Jampea, Selayar, Tombolongan and Ternate

The percentage tells you how much of the animal’s genetic lineage comes from these island localities.

For example:
• 50% Kalatoa = 50% Kalatoa locality + 50% mainland
• 50% Kalatoa / 25% Jampea = 75% combined Dwarf/SD locality blood + 25% mainland
• 75% Madu / 25% mainland = 75% Super Dwarf locality blood
• 25% Kalatoa / 25% Madu = 50% Super Dwarf

The exact locality matters. A 50% Kalatoa animal and a 50% Jampea animal aren’t equivalent. Kalatoa is a Super Dwarf locality, while Jampea is classed as Dwarf. Higher percentages generally increase the influence of the smaller island lineage, but adult size is still influenced by s*x, genetics, feeding and individual growth.

So when looking at a “Super Dwarf” retic, don’t just look at the SD percentage — look at the actual localities behind that percentage.

Want to know more about Super Dwarf retics, locality percentages or how the genetics work? Ask a member of our team in store — we’re happy to explain! 👋
