‼️REMINDER - 11 DAYS TO GO‼️

🐄 Calf Pneumonia Talks 🐄

Following on from the success of our beef pneumonia talk, we will be running another talk about calf pneumonia - this time on Monday 5th October with a DAIRY focused meeting, aimed at dairy herds and calf rearers.

The meeting will cover a variety of aspects of pneumonia, including prevention, diagnostics, vaccination, housing, and cost efficacy - how much pneumonia can cost a farm and how to reduce this!

There will also be a guest speaker joining from Zoetis, so an excellent chance to ask all your vaccine related questions.

Please call or email us to book on. It will take place in the conference room at our Penwortham practice and will include lunch and refreshments.

🐏 TUPPING SEASON IS APPROACHING — HAVE YOU TESTED YOUR TUPS?
We’re finding higher numbers of sub-fertile and infertile tups on semen testing, with bluetongue a potential contributing factor.

With tupping just around the corner, don’t leave your scanning and lambing percentages to chance. A tup with poor semen quality can have a significant impact on conception rates — and you may not know there’s a problem until it’s too late.

🔬 Our advice: get your tups semen tested ASAP, before they go out with the ewes.

Testing allows you to identify infertile or sub-fertile tups early, giving you time to replace them or make alternative plans before tupping starts.

📅 Don’t wait until scanning to find out there was a problem.

If you have tups that are due to be used this season, get in touch with the practice to arrange semen testing.

🐑 Protect your scanning results. Protect your lambing percentage. Test your tups before tupping.

‼️Parasitic Gastroenteritis Alert‼️

It has finally started to rain! Great for the grass but unfortunately worm burdens on pasture are now able to rapidly increase.

Over the last few months, the recent dry weather has reduced hatching and therefore animals' exposure to worm burdens. This can prevent them developing a strong immunity.

These two factors combined can cause a perfect storm of a flush of eggs on pasture being grazed by naive animals. The result: poorer weight gains and higher lamb losses.

It is therefore essential to monitor for signs of worm burdens via worm egg counting, daily weight gains or pale membranes.

Contact the Farm Team if you would like to discuss worm control for your flock or herd with a vet.

🐄 Staff Update 🐄

Some of you who have pets with us may have already met Maddy, who is an experienced small animal vet having been with Ribble Vets since March 2025.
From the start of August this year she has made the change to become a mixed vet, joining the farm team. She has a particular interest in dairy and is looking forward to enhancing her current skillset to encompass farm as well as small animal.

Thank you to everyone who came to Garstang Show earlier this month, it was lovely to see so many familiar faces as well as some new ones!

Congratulations to the winners of our competitions. They have been contacted and received their prizes. Thank you to everyone who played along - especially our ‘pump the cow’ game which got particularly competitive!
