PARVOVIRUS ALERT ⚠️
We've been saddened to hear about the recent suspected case of canine parvovirus reported in the news.

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause severe illness in dogs, with symptoms including lethargy, vomiting, and bloody diarrhoea, sadly resulting in death for approx. 90% of dogs who contract it.

The good news is that parvovirus is included in your dog's core vaccinations, and routine vaccinations are highly effective at preventing the disease.

If your dog is up to date with their vaccinations, there is no need to take any further action. However, if you're unsure whether your pet's vaccinations are current, or if they may have missed a booster, please get in touch. We're happy to check their records and advise on any vaccinations they may need.

Protecting your pet starts with prevention. 🐾

A SPOTLIGHT ON SQPs 🔦
The first-ever is underway, and we're proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible work of SQPs (Suitably Qualified Persons) – also known as Animal Medicines Advisors.

This week is all about celebrating the professionalism, dedication and expertise of SQPs, and recognising the vital role they play in supporting animal health and the responsible prescribing of veterinary medicines.

SQPs are highly qualified professionals, yet many people who interact with them may not fully appreciate the breadth of their knowledge or the support they can provide. Every year, SQPs offer essential advice to millions of pet owners, horse owners and farmers across the UK, helping to keep animals healthy and well cared for.

Here at Oakhill Vets, we're proud to have SQPs working across every division of our practice, with several more team members currently undertaking their training.

Thank you to all SQPs for the important work you do every day!

IS YOUR PET MICROCHIPPED? 🔍
Every year, countless pets go missing... and sadly, many never make it back home. June is National Microchipping Month which aims to spread awareness about the importance of keeping your details up to date. 👀 Have you checked yours recently?

NOT MICROCHIPPED?
Microchipping is a simple, permanent and secure way to help ensure your pet can be identified and returned to you if lost or stolen. Unlike collars and tags, which can be lost or removed, microchips are always there when it matters most.

✅ It’s now compulsory by law to microchip both dogs and cats.
🐰 We also recommend microchipping rabbits and other small pets too!

It's only £15 with a nurse and FREE for cats and dogs on our 365 Care Plan. 📞 Book your microchipping appointment today and give your pet the best chance of finding their way home.

PET OF THE MONTH - MAY 2026: CASPER
Congratulations to our Casper and owner Danny.

Casper was found wandering the streets of Preston and, after no owner came forward despite weeks of posters and Facebook appeals, he became part of his new family alongside two other bunnies.

Just 8 weeks later, Casper became seriously ill and was diagnosed with gut stasis caused by an intestinal blockage. Despite having less than a 50% chance of survival, his family chose to fight for him. Thankfully, Casper came through surgery and, after a difficult recovery, is now back to hopping around, eating, and enjoying life again.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE FOREIGN BODY RETRIEVAL IN A CURIOUS CAT
3-year-old female cat was referred to us after her owner noticed she had eaten some string from a clothing tag.

An ultrasound was first performed to ensure the string was not causing any intestinal obstruction. Once confirmed safe to proceed, we performed a gastroscopy — a minimally invasive procedure using a small camera passed down the oesophagus into the stomach to retrieve the foreign material.

In the video you can see we are in the stomach (identified from the Rugal folds (or rugae) which are prominent mucosal ridges inside a cat’s stomach). Using a 3-way grabber passed through the endoscope, we were able to carefully grasp the string and gently remove it through the oesophagus and out of the mouth.

Gastroscopy is a minimally invasive technique with little downtime for patients and can also be used to assess the oesophagus and stomach in a variety of cases."

FROM SPINAL STROKE TO STRONGER STEPS: EVE’S REHAB JOURNEY 🐾
Eve came to see Emma, our Certified Canine Mobility Nurse, in June 2025 following an FCE (Fibrocartilaginous Embolism) she suffered in 2024 - a sudden, non-progressive “spinal stroke” caused by disc material blocking blood supply to the spinal cord.

Since her FCE, Eve had been knuckling her left hind leg when walking, which never fully resolved. On assessment, she showed muscle atrophy and reduced range of motion through her hip.

After just 4 weeks of starting her exercise rehabilitation programme, Eve was already getting stronger on walks, attempting to climb onto furniture again, and showing improvements on stairs.

Her muscle mass and hip range of motion have both improved significantly, and she is now well settled into her ongoing maintenance exercise programme.

While Eve will likely need lifelong support and management, her progress so far has been fantastic, and she’s proving just how much difference targeted rehabilitation can make. ❤️

If you think your pet could benefit from a mobility assessment or rehabilitation programme with Emma, please get in touch.
