These three have all had a titre test here at the shop.

That's Bodhi in the pink t-shirt, and Lyra at the end, giving me her paw. The westie in the middle arrived with four siblings — one owner, five westies, all done in a single morning. Which is at least part of the reason I can't tell you which one he is.

All three had a small blood sample taken, all three went home with a little bandage, and as far as any of them were concerned nothing had happened at all.

That's the part I've never managed to get across in writing, so I'll let them do it instead. What stops most people booking a titre test isn't the price — it's picturing their dog being held down. It's a few seconds and a small sample, and most of them are considerably more interested in what's behind the treat counter.

Our next clinic is Sunday 1st November, here at the shop. 11 places.

If a booster reminder has landed from your vet and you've not decided what to do about it, a titre test tells you whether your dog still has measurable antibodies from the last one.

And three honest things, because I'd rather you booked knowing exactly what this is:

1. It isn't cheaper than a booster. £75 all in, and a booster is usually less. You're not saving money. You're buying information you didn't have before, and whether that's worth £75 is your call, not mine.

2. It doesn't make the decision for you. It gives you a number. What you do with that number is a conversation between you and your vet. Plenty of people get their result and vaccinate anyway, and that's a perfectly sensible thing to do.

3. It isn't an anti-vaccination thing. I'm offering a test, not a position. People feel strongly in both directions and which way you lean isn't my business.

£25 books your place, £75 total with the balance on the day. Results come back to you afterwards.

📅 Sunday 1st November 📍 Unit 33 Old Mill Industrial Estate, Bamber Bridge PR5 6SY 💷 £25 to book · £75 total 🎟️ 11 places

Worth knowing: there are 11 places, and last time one family took five of them. It doesn't take many bookings for a clinic to fill, and I don't run them often.

Booking link's in the comments. Ask me anything — here, or by message if you'd rather not ask publicly.

With thanks to their owners for letting me share this lot.

Three new Buddy's Choice varieties have landed:

🐄 Beef & Chicken — £1.70 🐟 Salmon & Turkey — £1.95 🐑 Lamb & Cod — £2.35

Here's the thing most people don't know about this range. You won't find it in a chain, and you won't find it on the big online marketplaces. Albion only supply Buddy's Choice to independent shops.

Which is worth saying out loud, because people sometimes ask me — politely or otherwise — why they'd buy raw from me rather than clicking the cheapest thing that comes up on a search. This is one of the honest answers. Some of what's in my freezer isn't available to the places you'd be comparing me against.

The other thing I rate about it is the pack size. 454g. One pack. So if you've been wondering whether your dog gets on with fish, that's £1.95 to find out — instead of committing to a box of something and then discovering it's the one protein they'll push round the bowl and leave.

That's what actually stops people trying raw, in my experience. Not the cost of a day's food. The cost of getting it wrong.

And it's 80/10/10, exactly as it says on the pack.

Fifteen varieties in the range now. In the freezer today — we're open till 3 — or order online and collect whenever you're passing. Click and collect is free.

Three changes to how we’re running things — two from 1st November, and one that starts today.

FROM SUNDAY 1st NOVEMBER

🕔 We’re open later. Thursday, Friday and Saturday we’ll be open 10am till 5pm instead of 10 till 3. Two extra hours, three days a week — which should help a lot if you’ve ever had to leg it over on a lunch break or given up on a Saturday afternoon.

🚚 All deliveries move to Tuesdays. Every area, one day. Doing the whole run in one go is far more efficient than spreading it across the week, and it means I’m behind the counter more instead of out in the van.

FROM TODAY

💷 Delivery prices are going up. Chorley, Leyland and Preston go to £4, and further out it’s £5. The free delivery offer is ending.

Fuel’s been going one way for a long time now and I’ve absorbed it for as long as I sensibly can. I’m not going to dress that up — nobody enjoys this bit, me included.

What I’d say is that the longer hours should give you a proper alternative. From November we’re open till 5 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and click and collect is still free.

Any questions, ask away. 🐾

Canicross taster sessions are back — with the wonderful Michelle from Miles with Michelle!

Now the weather’s cooled down and the canicross season has started with a bang, how about giving it a go?

All you need is yourself, a pair of trainers and your dog. We’ve got a kit bag very kindly provided by Non-Stop Dogwear, so if you haven’t got any gear yet, that’s completely fine.

Michelle is a UK Athletics running coach, and she’ll take you round a 2-3km route going through the canicross commands as you go. And no — you won’t be running all of it. If you’ve never run a step in your life, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Three sessions, six places on each:

Sunday 25th October
Sunday 8th November
Sunday 22nd November

All at Cuerden Valley Park, 8.30am.

£25 each, which includes:
✅ Expert guidance from a UK Athletics running coach
✅ Non-Stop Dogwear kit hire
✅ A goodie bag

Booking link’s in the comments — six places a session, so they won’t hang about.

Kit’s out. Two days to go.

That’s everything Maple and I need on Sunday — a harness, a bungee line and a belt. Doesn’t look like much laid out on the sofa. In about 48 hours it’ll be dragging me up a Roman wall for 13.5 miles.

I’d love to say I’m feeling calm. The 5k last weekend was tough — the hills genuinely never seemed to end — and that was 5k. Maple, who absolutely smashed it, appears entirely unbothered by any of this. One of us has read the elevation profile and it isn’t her. 😬

And then there’s this, which I still can’t quite get my head round.

When I last properly asked, we were on £70. We’re now at £497.

I don’t know what to say about that except thank you. Some of you I know well, some of you I’ve never met, and a few of you I suspect just saw a photo of a knackered woman and a smug dog and chipped in anyway. Either way — thank you, genuinely.
Every penny goes to Wolfwood, the wildlife and dog rescue up in Lancaster. They take in the animals nobody else will. Strays, handovers, injured wildlife they patch up and release, and a retirement centre for elderly horses and ponies that almost nobody knows exists. Rhiannon, who’s running it with me and Echo, works there and adopted Echo from them two years ago.

£123 to go. That’s about twenty-five fivers and two days. If we get over the line before I set off on Saturday I will genuinely run faster for it.

Link’s in the comments, jar’s on the counter.

I’m in tomorrow 9am till 12pm, then I’m off to Northumberland. Closed Monday, back Tuesday — probably walking sideways.

Wish us luck 🐾

Does this look familiar?

This is Bracken. In my wardrobe hiding from fireworks.

And here's the bit I want to be honest about, we did everything. All the desensitisation, properly since he was just a few weeks old, and it worked last year. This year not so much.

So if you are reading this thinking you have missed a step, or failed somewhere you haven't. Fear can go backwards. It can also be linked to pain — dogs who are uncomfortable are far more likely to become noise sensitive, and it's one of the first things a good behaviourist will look at. So if yours has suddenly got worse for no obvious reason, it's worth a vet once over.

What it does mean though is, it's worth starting a plan now rather than hoping. Bonfire night is just under a month away, which means we need to start NOW.

Five things I want to tell you:

1. You cannot make a dog worse by comforting them. Fear isn't a behaviour you can reward - it's an emotion. If your dog wants a cuddle and some reassurance, give it them! But the same applies if they want space. Let them tell you what they need.

2. Build the den/safe place now, not in 3 weeks time. Somewhere small, dark and enclosed. behind the sofa, a covered crate, a wardrobe! They need to know it's there if they want it.

3. Calming supplements - this is exactly why I'm posting now and not on the 4th of November. The herbal ones aren't something you give at 7pm on the night and hope — they need building up over a few weeks. There are fast-acting ones for the night itself and they absolutely have their place, but they work far better on top of something you've already started.

4. Play it safe - don't walk when it's already dark, and give them tea a little earlier - a scared dog is unlikely to eat.

5. Medication - There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with giving medication if they need it. if your dog's fear is severe, not a bit unsettled but genuinely terrified then speak to your vet, but do it sooner rather than later!

What works for you guys? Drop your tips and tricks in the comments you never know you might help someone out!

Maple and I did our first canicross race yesterday.

It was tough — the hills never seemed to end — but my god it was pretty up there. And Maple absolutely smashed it. Honestly, we had an absolute blast.

Which was the dress rehearsal, because on Sunday we're doing the Hadrian's Wall Half Marathon. 13.1 miles instead of 5k. I'm choosing not to think about that too hard.

Which brings me to the boring bit, because it does mean our hours shift at the weekend:

🕘 Saturday 10th — open 9am to 12pm
🚫 Monday 12th — closed all day
✅ Tuesday to Friday — completely normal, 10-3

I need the Saturday afternoon to get up to Northumberland, and the Monday to lie down. So if you normally shop on a Saturday afternoon, or were planning to pop in on the Monday — this is your heads up. The freezers will be in a much better state by midweek anyway (more on that tomorrow 👀).

We're running it for Wolfwood, the rescue up in Lancaster. Link's in the comments if yesterday's photo moves you to it — I'll ask properly later in the week, I promise.
