Brushed and clipped! ✅️ 😍😍

People may think this is a minor win but for a dog like Toby these are 2 large mountains we have climbed for the last few years!

And today he let us do both 🤩

Because of Toby's breed, his fur matts for fun and 6 months ago had to be fully dematted to give his owner the best chance to reintroduce brushing without the pain he had associated with it, now we have a technique he happily enjoys we can prevent them matts before they start 🥰

Well done Toby 👏👏

Pebbles got a little distracted by her class mates last week but she needed no help to bring herself back to her boundary and resettle! 🤩

Did you know for the first year your priority should not be for your dog to engage with everything and everyone... but aim for them to engage with you around everything and everyone 😉🤩

🐾 Pain Awareness Month: What should you do if you notice the signs?

Earlier this month, we shared some of the signs that could indicate your pet may be experiencing pain.

But what should you do if you notice a change in your pet? 💚

We know how well you know your pet, and often you’re the first to notice when something isn’t quite right.

Changes such as slowing down, struggling with stairs, limping, sleeping more or finding it difficult to get comfortable are all worth telling us about. Please don’t assume they’re simply part of getting older.

🐾 Keep a note of what you’re noticing
When did the change start? Is it becoming more frequent? Does it happen during certain activities or at particular times of day? These details can really help us understand what’s going on.

📹 Take a video if you can
Some changes in movement or behaviour may not happen while your pet is at the vets. A short video of your pet at home can be really useful for our team.

🩺 Talk to us
If you’re concerned that your pet may be in pain, get in touch with us. We can help investigate the cause of the changes and, if pain is involved, discuss the most appropriate ways to manage it.

❤️ You know your pet best, and we are here to help 🐾

Small changes can sometimes be early signs that something isn’t right. If you’ve noticed your pet slowing down or behaving differently, please speak to us — it’s always better to ask.

But we couldn't help share a clip from our last group of puppies, handsome Douglas!

Here he is perfectly demonstrating our adaption of 'The empty bowl game' created by Behavet: The Pet Behaviour Experts we call 'The treat away game' 🤩

Here at Ribble Vets Behaviour we see a lot of dogs that have had a traumatic time when being introduced to the muzzle and subsequently it's not an easy time to train them, should they need to wear one for a vet visit etc.

Thats why we use the tecnique below.

By reducing the muzzle's enclosed end and getting them first used to something on their face that doesnt compromise them, slowly progressing through each stage with each being more restrictive than the last we have had a much higher and faster success rate in turning the scary muzzle to a fun and happy place to stick your nose in and eventually wear!

Remember, the pace is set by them and is automatic, if the brain senses danger that's not something they can control nor is their response, slow and steady wins the race 🐢

If you don't fancy buying multiple muzzles and having a cutting session 😅 we offer muzzle training sessions for £20 a session (discount applies for P*P clients)

We too don't reccomend typical fetch!
..That doesn't mean you cant use balls for other much more healthy beneficial activities to keep their brain enriched without the negative results of high energy repetitive ball throwing 🥎

⭐️Tip- help them get it right by starting on a lead and use treats, rewarding them for waiting while you place the ball out and coming away from their ball! Once they've learnt the game you can phase these out as the release is the reward 😉

Our dogs can't tell us the pain is too much and they can't go get their own pain relief, so the responsibility falls to us.

Being worried about the long term effects is ok but not at the expense of their comfort day to day ❤️‍🩹

"Hes just getting old and stiff"

"He holds up his leg only sometimes after a long walk"

"He still plays ball and wants to walk, so he can’t be in pain"

Like us, that stiffness has a cause and there are many pain relief options to keep them comfortable with low long-term risk when managed correctly through your vet.

❌ MYTH: "Prescription pain relief will destroy my dog's liver and kidneys, so it’s safer to avoid medication and stick to natural alternatives."

✅ FACT: When prescribed and monitored under veterinary supervision, modern pain medications are safe, highly effective, and life-changing. Unmanaged chronic pain is far more dangerous to your dog’s welfare and longevity than properly managed medication.

While every pharmaceutical carries potential side effects, modern veterinary analgesics (such as NSAIDs and targeted monoclonal antibodies) undergo rigorous safety testing. Routine monitoring - such as baseline blood and urine panels every 6 to 12 months - allows your vet team to ensure medications are being metabolised safely and catch any subtle changes well before they become clinical issues.

Leaving joint pain unmanaged out of fear carries massive, hidden risks: severe muscle atrophy, persistent neuroplastic pain ("wind-up"), mobility loss, anxiety, and ultimately a drastically reduced quality of life.

High-quality supplements and lifestyle changes are fantastic supportive tools, but they cannot replace the targeted anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving power of prescription medication when chronic joint disease is present.

📢📢 A last minute space has opened up on our teenage party! Starting next Tuesday at 7.30pm

Are you having issues with your teenage rebels and need help to give them some skills to help manage their behaviour?

At our teenage parties we teach loose lead walking, recall, impulse control around people/dogs/toys and food and introduce your lovely dogs to scent work to name a few... all the skills needed to help overcome common issues and frustrations during this phase of development.

Don't worry if you have an adult dog that could benefit from the above, we don't descriminate and allow all ages above 6 months to these classes.

If you're interested, get in touch with reception and 1 of our team will contact you with all the details.

Hope to see you and your dog there! 😍
