๐ŸŒพ August on the Farm: A Challenging Summer for UK Livestock

August is bringing a difficult combination of pressures for livestock farmers, with bluetongue, prolonged dry weather and tighter forage supplies all influencing decisions on farm.

Bluetongue remains a key concern, particularly with the breeding season approaching, making vigilance, responsible livestock sourcing and keeping up to date with the latest Defra, APHA and veterinary guidance increasingly important.

Meanwhile, dry conditions are putting pressure on grass growth and, on some farms, bringing supplementary feeding forward and increasing demand on forage normally reserved for autumn and winter.

Now is a good time to assess forage stocks and quality, livestock condition and likely feed requirements. Earlier housing or changes to grazing could also affect nutritional needs as we head into autumn.

With weather and feed markets remaining uncertain, planning ahead can give farmers more flexibility to respond to changing conditions.

๐ŸŒพ July Market Update | Harvest Begins Across the UK

Harvest is now underway, with early reports showing encouraging feed barley quality in many areas. However, prolonged hot, dry weather continues to create challenges for both arable and livestock farmers, with variable yields, slowing grass growth and increasing pressure on forage supplies.

As temperatures remain high, now is the time to review forage stocks, assess feed requirements and ensure livestock are well supported through the summer months.

In our latest market update, we cover:
๐ŸŒฑ Early harvest progress and barley quality
๐ŸŒพ The impact of dry weather on grass growth and forage production
๐Ÿ’ง Managing livestock during periods of heat stress
๐Ÿ“ˆ Why forward planning is key as the season develops

At Target Feeds, we're continuing to monitor the market closely and working with our suppliers to ensure a reliable feed supply throughout harvest.
