September is here, and while there may still be plenty of grass about, it’s a good time to start thinking ahead to autumn and winter feeding. 🌾

As temperatures drop and grass growth begins to slow, keeping an eye on livestock condition and performance is important. Fields can still look green, but that doesn’t always mean grazing is providing everything animals need.

Now is a good time to:

• Check body condition and weights
• Look at the quality and quantity of forage available
• Consider forage analysis ahead of winter
• Introduce any additional feeds gradually
• Review energy, protein, vitamin and mineral requirements

Every farm and feeding system is different, so autumn feeding should be based on what your livestock need and what your forage is already providing.

Planning ahead now can make the transition into winter that little bit easier.

🌾 August on the Farm: A Challenging Summer for UK Livestock

August is bringing a difficult combination of pressures for livestock farmers, with bluetongue, prolonged dry weather and tighter forage supplies all influencing decisions on farm.

Bluetongue remains a key concern, particularly with the breeding season approaching, making vigilance, responsible livestock sourcing and keeping up to date with the latest Defra, APHA and veterinary guidance increasingly important.

Meanwhile, dry conditions are putting pressure on grass growth and, on some farms, bringing supplementary feeding forward and increasing demand on forage normally reserved for autumn and winter.

Now is a good time to assess forage stocks and quality, livestock condition and likely feed requirements. Earlier housing or changes to grazing could also affect nutritional needs as we head into autumn.

With weather and feed markets remaining uncertain, planning ahead can give farmers more flexibility to respond to changing conditions.
