One thing I see a lot with riders is trying to fix the thing they can SEE, without really understanding what’s causing it in the first place.

An unstable lower leg becomes “heels down”.
A collapsing posture becomes “sit up”.
Loss of confidence becomes “just keep riding”.

But often those things are symptoms, not the root cause.

A lot of riding issues are connected. Rider stability, tension, confidence, biomechanics even down to both horse and riders understanding and application of aids. All feed into each other, which is why so many riders end up feeling stuck or frustrated despite trying really hard.

That’s exactly why I approach things the way I do. Instead of just firefighting symptoms, I want to understand the bigger picture first so we can actually make progress that lasts. It’s not necessarily that what people are doing is wrong, I’m a great fan of 2 point seat work, but if you’re not doing it correctly, your saddle is out of balance or it’s a muscle imbalance issue, your efforts are going to waste.

If there’s something you’ve been trying to solve and want help figuring out what may actually be going on underneath it all and finding a long term solution, book in for a Rider Performance Assessment

My promise is I only take on a limited number of clients I know I can help and if I think it’s a problem for another professional ie saddle fitter/vet etc I send you their way as we can’t fix it all!

Whether you’re doing circles in a test or turns to a fence, thinking about having a curve of rails either side of you will bring your awareness into both your horses and your own balance.

Alignment & vertical balance can be so easily overlooked as people obsess with their variation of an “outline” as being the goal. But a horse and rider with good balance will be far more likely to stay clear of injuries and produce higher quality work, than that of a crooked horse/rider working in a false frame.

People think being straight to a fence means the line to/from, but more importantly it means the horses body is straight, drifting, falling in/out etc are like driving a car with its tracking off
not great for optimal power & performance and after a while your at risk of a blowout!

So here’s a couple of jumping exercises we played with this week to help Ted & Lala
