WELL… WE’VE DONE A YEAR!

Today marks exactly ONE YEAR since me and the wife Emma took over Southsea Model Village.

And what a bloody year it’s been. 😂

When we took the keys a year ago, we knew we were taking on a massive job. What I’m not entirely sure we appreciated was quite how much of our lives this little place would consume.

And somehow, amongst all of it, I still work a full-time job as well.

So a lot of what you see happening at the village is squeezed into evenings, days off, weekends and whatever spare hours I can find.
There have definitely been moments where I’ve wondered what the hell we’ve got ourselves into.

But looking back over the last 12 months, I’m bloody proud of what we’ve achieved.

We’ve repaired, restored, painted, planted, rebuilt and added loads to the village.

We’ve created completely new scenes, brought tired areas back to life, added thousands upon thousands of plants and flowers, introduced new events and given people more reasons to come back and see what’s changed.

We’ve had dinosaurs, giant bubbles, birds of prey, reptiles, unicorns, ponies, K-Pop, foam and Halloween coming soon.

And then there’s the slightly less normal side of running a model village

Thomas got kidnapped.

Mick disappeared to the World Cup.

Foxes formed an organised crime syndicate.

Squirrels escaped from police custody.

Agent Nutbuster turned up.

And Dinny Darren has somehow gone from being a random little figure in the village to having a more complicated backstory than most Netflix characters. 😂

It’s certainly never bloody boring.

But we’re nowhere near finished.

This winter is going to be a BIG one.

Once the gates close and we can properly get stuck in, there are loads of new scenes planned, existing areas getting completely revamped and plenty of new stupid ideas currently rattling around in my head that probably shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a model village.

We want you to come back next year and find loads of things that simply weren’t here before.

But we also know the next chapter is going to be a tough one.

From February, the major seafront defence works reach our section of Southsea. The seafront immediately outside the village will be closed for around 16 months, meaning access from the seafront will be cut off and parking nearby is going to become much more difficult.

WE WILL STILL BE OPEN AND YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO GET TO US.

But realistically, we know it’s going to hurt us.

For a small independent attraction like ours, 16 months is a bloody long time.

So over those 16 months we’re going to need your support more than we ever have before.

Come and visit us. Bring the kids. Bring the grandparents. Tell your mates. Share our posts. Come back and see what’s new. Support the events. Grab a drink. Buy a season pass. Even just recommending us to somebody who’s visiting Portsmouth genuinely helps.

Our plan is pretty simple:

Keep investing.
Keep improving.
Keep building.
Keep making people laugh.
And make this little village better every single year.

Most importantly, though, thank you.

Thank you to everyone who’s visited us over the last year, shared our posts, recommended us, attended an event, left us a review, helped us, supplied us, volunteered, worked here or simply followed along with the absolute nonsense online.

You’ve helped keep this little place alive.

A year ago we took over Southsea Model Village.

Today it feels like our village.

And we’re only just getting started.

Here’s to Year Two. ❤️

Although judging by Year One, God knows what state the place will be in by this time next year. 😂

Also we couldn’t have don’t it without our amazing volunteers and parents.

A small world with a big heart.

☀️ WE’RE OPEN TODAY! ☀️

If Victorious Festival ain’t your thing, we’ve got you covered.

No massive crowds.
No £12 pints.
No standing in a field wondering who the hell is actually on stage.
And considerably less chance of someone throwing a cup of warm p*e over your head.

Instead, come and spend a few hours wandering around Southsea Model Village.

Trains running
Tiny buildings
Thousands of flowers
Loads of ridiculous little scenes
Games tunnel
Castle, waterfall, railway and all the usual village madness

After yesterday’s biblical soaking, we’re dried out, back open and ready to go.

So if you’re looking at the Common today and thinking “Nah”…

We’re just down the road.

OPEN TODAY 10.30am – 4.30pm

Have a cracking day whether you’re coming to see us or heading into Victorious.

Although ours has considerably smaller queues for the toilet.

VICTORIOUS FESTIVAL HAS PEAKED.

Forget the headliners.
Forget the big names.
Forget whoever they spent hundreds of thousands of pounds booking.

DINNY DARREN AND THE SQUINS HAVE ARRIVED.

After absolutely no rehearsals, no record deal, no musical ability and, crucially, no invitation whatsoever, Darren has somehow blagged his way onto the main stage at Victorious.

Apparently he got through security by telling them he was “with the band.”

There was no band.

So he made one.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you….

DINNY DARREN AND THE SQUINS.

Their debut set included the soon-to-be classics:

K***s N Knockers
Lavender Stops Them Reading Your Thoughts
The Flowers Are Listening
Flying USB Bees
and the emotional power ballad…

I SAW YOUR FIAT 500 OUTSIDE HIS HOUSE!

Halfway through the set Darren stopped the music for 11 minutes to explain that the big screen behind him was actually a government facial-recognition device.

Then he unplugged it.

The Squins carried on regardless.

Security are currently discussing how to remove him, but unfortunately Darren has declared the stage “model village territory” and says Portsmouth City Council has no jurisdiction over him.

The crowd are chanting his name.

The bassist has joined his conspiracy group.

And Darren has just announced they’re doing an encore.

Victorious 2026.

You’ll always remember where you were when Dinny Darren and the Squins absolutely smashed it. 😂

COMING SOON: THE WORLD TOUR.

CLOSED TODAY

Well… we’ve had a bloody good run!

After what feels like weeks of getting away with some pretty decent summer weather, Mother Nature has finally looked at Southsea and gone

“That’ll do. Have some rain.”

Unfortunately, with it absolutely tipping down and looking pretty grim out there, Southsea Model Village will be CLOSED TODAY.

We’ve had a fantastic run through the summer holidays so far, with some brilliant busy days and loads of you coming through the gates, so we really can’t complain.

The little people are staying indoors, Thomas is parked up, and we all have got the day off

Thanks everyone, and enjoy your soggy Saturday!

I bought a thing… 😂

And by thing, I mean a bloody GIANT 25 foot Stay Puft Marshmallow Man 😝

Because apparently I’m still allowed to make purchasing decisions unsupervised.

If you’ve ever seen Ghostbusters, you’ll know this fella. One of the most iconic scenes from the film the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man stomping through New York causing absolute carnage.

So naturally, I thought…

That’ll look good stomping through a model village. 😂

Last year’s Skeleton Invasion was only the beginning… this year the villagers are fighting back 👊🏼

This Halloween, the story continues.

And judging by the size of what I’ve just bought, things may be getting slightly out of hand.

Halloween 2026 is coming… 🎃💀

More soon…

🌿🌸 KEYDELLS… DONE! 🌸🌿

This has been one hell of a build.

Earlier this year the amazing team at Keydells Nurseries offered to supply us with plants and flowers for the Model Village completely FREE OF CHARGE.

And they haven’t just dropped off a couple of trays of petunias and called it a day. They’ve supplied us with THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of plants and flowers, helping us completely transform areas all around the village.

So we wanted to do something in return.

Naturally, being us, instead of buying them a box of chocolates

We built Keydells. 😝

Our miniature Keydells Garden Centre is now finished, complete with the main building, entrance, three greenhouses, plant displays, trees, shrubs, pots, compost, staff, customers, forklift and all the little bits and pieces you’d expect to find wandering around the real place.

And then there are the plants

We’ve used over TEN THOUSAND individual miniature flowers and plants throughout this build.

Yes. Tens of thousands 😂

We also wanted the model to include some proper little nods to Keydells itself.

🦜 Charlie the Cockatoo is in there sitting above the entrance and is still going strong at the grand old age of 55.

🐈 Harry the cat is there too. Harry has sadly passed away, so we thought it would be lovely to make sure he always has his little place at Keydells.

🫏 And anyone who knows Keydells will probably spot the donkey outside too.

There’s some cracking history behind the real place as well.

Keydells was established in 1953 by John Strange, with the whole story beginning with John selling tomatoes from a wheelbarrow.
More than 70 years later, it’s become the Keydells everyone knows today.
Today it is still run by the Strange family, Johns son Dave and granddaughter Vicky.
They have been incredibly generous in helping another local attraction that’s been around for a fair few years itself.

This model is simply our way of saying a massive THANK YOU.

Thank you to everyone at Keydells for the plants, the flowers ( Dave & Vicky), the advice(Nell), the deliveries(Brad)and for helping us make the Model Village look better than ever this year.

Hopefully we’ve done your place justice

Just slightly smaller.

A big thank you to my father in law Graham for all his help on this build. 👊🏼

A REAL UNICORN & A TINY SHETLAND PONY… REPTILES, SNAKES & CREEP CRAWLIES ALL IN ONE DAY!

Sunday 23rd August is shaping up to be a VERY different day at Southsea Model Village!

First up, we’re welcoming Portsmouth Reptile & Amphibian Society (PRAS) to the village with an incredible selection of reptiles, amphibians and creepy crawlies.

Exactly who comes along depends on which club members and animals are available on the day feeding and shedding comes first when you’re dealing with this lot! — but previous line-ups can include:

🐍 Burmese Pythons
🐍 Royal Pythons
🐍 Corn Snakes
🐍 Various Boas
🐍 Hognoses & Pine Snakes
🐍 And potentially even an ANACONDA 👀

Plus lizards including Bearded Dragons, Skinks, Geckos and possibly a Monitor Lizard, along with frogs, toads, tarantulas, scorpions and all sorts of weird and wonderful invertebrates. 🕷️🦂🦎

And if looking isn’t enough… CUDDLE TOKENS will be available! ❤️

Buy a token and exchange it with one of the PRAS members to hold or cuddle one of the animals they’re handling. Money raised through the tokens is passed on to recognised charities, primarily those involved with herpetology — so you’re helping a good cause while casually standing there holding a python.

BUT THAT’S ONLY HALF THE DAY…

You may have already spotted the miniature unicorn that’s recently appeared in the Model Village…

Well, on Sunday 23rd August we’re going one better.

🦄 WE’RE BRINGING IN THE REAL THING! 🦄

Meet the beautiful Princess the Unicorn, who’ll be joining us for UNICORN RIDES!
From 10.30-1.30.

Ride Princess – £6
Social media followers – £5

And Princess isn’t coming alone

Meet Rocky, an absolutely tiny and ridiculously cute miniature Shetland pony!

You’ll be able to spend some time grooming Rocky for £3 for five minutes. Brush him, fuss him and try not to work out whether he’ll fit in the boot of your car.

So that’s snakes, lizards, spiders, scorpions, frogs, a unicorn and a miniature Shetland pony…

Meanwhile Thomas will probably just be going round the track wondering what the hell happened to the Model Village. 😂

SUNDAY 23rd AUGUST
Southsea Model Village

Normal Model Village admission applies.
Unicorn rides, pony grooming and PRAS cuddle tokens are additional charges.

A proper family day out with LOADS going on — and definitely one for the camera!

Tickets available from our website or pay on the gate.

DINNY DARREN EMERGENCY UPDATE

Well that’s bloody done it.

The UK Government emergency alert has just gone off on everyone’s phones warning about the high risk of wildfires.

A perfectly sensible and important warning.

Unfortunately, Dinny Darren also received it.

Within approximately 14 seconds he appeared from behind the pub shouting:

“I F@&£ING TOLD YOU THEY COULD GET INTO OUR PHONES!” 😭😂

We tried explaining that it’s a nationwide warning about the very high risk of wildfires.

He’s not having it.

Apparently the wildfire bit is “just the cover story.”

He wants to know how the Government got his number when he’s “never given it to Burnham” and is now furious that putting his phone on airplane mode didn’t stop the Government finding him.

He’s wrapped it in tin foil and put it underneath a flowerpot.

He’s also pointing suspiciously at the Keydells flower displays again, claiming:

“First the listening flowers… now this. Connect the dots.”

Mick told him millions of people got the same alert.

Darren replied:

“Exactly, Mick. Think about it.”

We did.

It didn’t help.

He’s now gone to warn Forrest Gump and is demanding we unplug Thomas because “the trains will be next.”

For everyone else — the actual message is serious.

There is currently a very high risk of wildfires, so please avoid anything that could start a fire, including disposable BBQs, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks.

Especially around canoe lake.

🦅🦉 TOMORROW… THE SKIES ABOVE THE MODEL VILLAGE COME ALIVE! 🦅🦉

One of our BIG summer events is happening TOMORROW Saturday 15th August, as the fantastic Liberty’s Owl, Raptor & Reptile Centre return to Southsea Model Village!

And if you’ve never seen these birds flying around the village before, you’re in for a treat.

We’re talking owls, hawks, falcons, an eagle and more, with the birds on display throughout the day up on Castle Hill, where you can get a proper close-up look, grab some fantastic photos and chat to the handlers.

Then comes the best bit

LIVE FLYING DISPLAYS AT 12:00PM & 2:30PM!

Watching these incredible birds take off and swoop just metres above your head and across the miniature village really is something else. Judging by some of these photos, keeping your head down occasionally isn’t a terrible idea either.

The displays last around 20 minutes each, so there’s absolutely no need for everyone to arrive first thing — pick the display that suits you, enjoy the birds and have a wander around the whole village while you’re here.

TOMORROW — SATURDAY 15TH AUGUST
Gates open 10:30am
Birds on display throughout the day
Flying displays 12:00pm & 2:30pm
Southsea Model Village, Southsea Seafront

Tickets are still available online:

Bring the kids. Bring the camera. Bring Grandad.

Just don’t bring a pet mouse.

See you tomorrow!

🌞🌑 SOLAR ECLIPSE READY… 🌑🌞

Apparently our castle has been preparing for the solar eclipse.

We thought it was just a model.

Turns out the bloke who built it knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

Sun lined up perfectly over the keep tonight.

Now we just need Dinny Darren to explain why this definitely proves the castle was built by aliens.

Southsea Model Village — where even the bloody sun gets involved.
