September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a time to recognise that pets often hide discomfort long before we notice it. Cats mask pain instinctively. Dogs carry on as normal. And many early signs slip under the radar, especially in busy homes 🐱🐶

☀️🐶 Keeping Your Dog Cool This Summer 🐶☀️
Summer heat can sneak up fast, and our dogs feel it even more intensely than we do. A few simple habits can make a huge difference in keeping them safe, comfortable, and happy all season long.

🌊 Hydration is everything 🌊 Make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water at all times. Add ice cubes on hot days for an extra chill.

🌳 Shade over sunshine 🌳 Whether you’re in the garden or out on a walk, stick to shady spots. Pavements can get scorching, if it’s too hot for your hand then it’s too hot for their paws.

🧊 Cool-down tools 🧊 Cooling mats, frozen treats, damp towels, or a gentle splash with the hose can help lower their body temperature safely.

🏃 Walk smart 🏃 Choose early mornings or late evenings when temperatures drop. Midday heat can be dangerous, even on cloudy days. If it's still too hot don't walk them at all.

🚫 Never leave them in a car 🚫 Even for a minute. Even with windows cracked. Cars heat up shockingly fast.

💛 Know the signs of heat stress 💛Heavy panting, drooling, wobbling, bright red gums, or lethargy mean your dog needs help immediately.

🚨 The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning, for 9am Wednesday 24 June - 9pm Thursday 25 June, as temperatures across the UK continue to rise. 🚨

Pet owners should take extra care to ensure their pets stay safe in the heat.

🐾 When walking your dog, remember the tarmac test: place the back of your hand on the ground for five seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

☀️ Other ways to help keep pets safe in the heat:
💧 Ensure they always have access to fresh drinking water
🏠 Provide plenty of shade and cool areas to rest
🚗 Never leave pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time

If you're concerned that your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, contact your veterinary practice immediately.
