🟢Young Thyra here running over basics at 11 months old.

She has been left behind on her training a bit as in her early months we were out picking up 3-4 days a week and the other 3-4 days training clients.

Since the shooting season has ended we have been tidying up our dogs we compete with and she hasn’t had too much put into her yet.

Here I’m checking her basic obedience, through the summer we are going to work on her hunting more as we haven’t done a great deal with her.

She loves to retrieve but she is going to be a beating dog only so we want her nice and obedient, a long way to go until she is ready, any game she has accidentally come across has certainly got her drive switched on!

Been very hard to keep poor Stiora cool in this heat. But for a first time mother she has done a fantastic job so far. 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

Dogs, like every other predator on the planet, are only interested in ‘the chase’ once something has gone past them and is moving in a direction away from them.

When something is running at them or towards them, they don’t know if they are the ‘prey’, however, when that animal has passed, and bear in mind that we are animals too, then the predatory instinct comes to the fore and the instinct to chase kicks in.

Do everyone a favour, including your puppy, and teach a solid sit-stay around moving objects and animals, and if you do come across horses or cows in a paddock, don’t take your puppy over to say hello, as you could end up teaching him that when he sees them off lead he’s supposed to run over and say hello… and then mayhem will ensue.

✅A solid wait command is more than just obedience… it’s real-world safety and control.

Whether it’s a fence stile, gate, kissing gate, road crossing, or loading into a vehicle, your dog should be able to stop, stay calm, and wait until released.

Too many dogs rush through gaps, barge ahead, or lose focus the second a distraction appears. A properly trained Gundog understands patience, self-control, and listening even when excited.

Teaching your dog to wait while you climb over a stile isn’t just about looking good in training — it builds steadiness, impulse control, and trust in your handling.

A dog that can calmly sit or wait while you move away, climb over obstacles, or open gates is often far easier to manage off lead in everyday life too.

Train for real life, not just the training field. ✅

⚠️WHEN TRAINING BLIND RETRIEVES…
DON’T ALWAYS RELY ON POSTS, TRACKS OR HEDGES.

⚠️A lot of trainers do.
But if your dog is constantly relying on visible markers, tracks, hedge lines or obvious routes… it’s not really learning to run a true blind.

Eventually your dog starts:
❌ Running to posts
❌ Following tracks
❌ Pulling onto hedge lines
❌ Hunting where it expects help

Instead of genuinely trusting your handling, direction and lines.

Some people even train like this for tests.
But in reality… you’re only kidding yourself.

Because when you eventually get a genuine blind retrieve in open ground with no help… it suddenly becomes much harder for the dog.

✅Yes, in lessons we will occasionally use posts or natural features to simplify concepts and help progression.

BUT…

We also teach people how to:
✅ Set up proper blinds without markers
✅ Run blinds away from tracks and hedges
✅ Teach true straight lines
✅ Build trust in handling and direction
✅ Create genuine blind retrieve understanding

✅A true blind should be about the dog understanding the job… not just following a feature in the environment.

💪🏼TRAIN TRUE. TEST TRUE.

What can be achieved with the right training, structure and consistency… 👌🐾

A well trained Gundog should be:
✅ Calm in the house
✅ Steady around distractions
✅ Reliable off lead
✅ Able to heel nicely
✅ Hunt with control
✅ Retrieve confidently
✅ Relax and switch off when needed

✅Whether you want a pet Gundog, working companion or simply a dog you can enjoy more day to day, the right training makes a huge difference.

✅L*z Graham’s “The Petgundog” courses are designed to build real understanding, common sense communication and teamwork between dog and owner. Progressing step by step to create calm, capable and enjoyable dogs to live with and train. 🔥
