Great conservation news: French Polynesia has created one of the world’s largest conserved areas on the planet, which includes two fully protected areas that span nearly 900,000 square kilometers (350,000 square miles).

The new protections will benefit the region’s biodiversity and way of life. https://pewtrsts.org/3SL6ZOi

Some scientists have suggested that if humans were to vanish, octopuses could be among the most likely animals to evolve into a species capable of forming complex societies. This idea is rooted in their exceptional intelligence and adaptability, which stand out in the animal kingdom.

Octopuses demonstrate advanced cognitive traits such as tool use, strategic camouflage, and non-verbal communication through skin color changes. Their nervous systems are especially unique, with most of their neurons located in their arms, allowing for highly coordinated and independent movement. Despite these abilities, there are significant evolutionary barriers. Octopuses are largely solitary and have short lifespans, both of which limit the development of social structures and the passing down of learned behaviors. For them to become civilization-builders, they would need to evolve more social tendencies and extended lifespans—traits crucial for sustained cultural and intellectual development.

Recent paleontological and evolutionary studies have revealed that the earliest structures resembling teeth likely developed on the skin of ancient armored jawless fish (like ostracoderms), not in the mouth.

These early "skin teeth," also known as dermal denticles or odontodes, functioned primarily as sensory and protective elements.

They had a similar structure to modern teeth—consisting of dentine and enamel-like tissues—and may have eventually migrated into the mouth through evolutionary processes, giving rise to oral teeth.

This discovery supports the "outside-in" hypothesis of tooth evolution, suggesting that external body structures gradually transitioned inward.

Research published in journals such as Nature Ecology & Evolution and Science Advances confirms this by analyzing fossilized specimens with advanced imaging techniques, revealing the presence of these skin-based sensory structures in early vertebrates over 400 million years ago.

What if coral reefs could be rebuilt like LEGO—one block at a time? That’s exactly what Aussie scientists are doing.

Using 3D-printed ceramic modules, the team at Reef Design Lab is bringing dead reefs back to life—literally. These coral "building blocks" mimic the natural twists and curves of real reefs, creating the perfect hangout for fish and a solid foundation for coral to regrow.

Their latest success? Installing the Maldives' first-ever artificial reef made from these modular structures. They're not just beautiful—they're smart. Each one becomes a living lab to test how coral survives rising sea temperatures.

We may not be able to stop climate change overnight, but this tech gives us a fighting chance to rebuild what’s already broken. One dive, one block, one reef at a time.
