⭐Chews or not to chew⭐

Here at Houndability HQ we are a big advocate of using natural chews to help satisfy our dogs needs and help them choose the correct behaviours.😊

✅Oral Health- According to a study, 78% of dogs over the age of three suffer from some form of dental disease. Maintaining your dog’s dental hygiene is a major part of ensuring overall health. Chewing on things is a natural way in which dogs can maintain their oral health. The right dental chew is, therefore, imperative for this.

✅Mental Stimulation- A balance has to be maintained between physical and mental health. Chewing is a great way to keep both the body and mind occupied. Providing appropriate outlets for chewing will benefit everyone, most importantly your pup!

✅Teething- One major factor behind puppies’ chewing is teething. Dog dental chews and toys are a great way to help your little one through the process of teething. It helps alleviate the pain, irritation and distress caused by it.

⭐Consistency is key 🔑

✅ Consistent cues in dog training
If you repeat cues and say it one time one day, and three times the next, you are not consistent. For more effective communication and training with your dog, try to make your verbal, as well as non-verbal, cues consistent. It makes it much easier for your dog to learn new commands or tricks.

✅ Keep the daily rituals
Dogs are each day confronted with challenging and confusing situations: They have to wait patiently for their food, stay calm in the traffic while walking and sometimes stay home alone for hours. With fix daily rituals you can teach your dog that these situations are normal parts of the day and, with time, your pup will get use to these challenges as a part of his daily routine.

✅ Stay on the same page
Everyone that interacts with your dog needs to be on the same page. If you don’t want your dog to jump on people, make sure he NEVER gets rewarded for jumping. Dogs often get blamed for being “stubborn” because they are not behaving properly. The problem, however, is not the dogs! It is often seen that each family member rewards different behaviours. What is the right answer? Make consistent rules and stick to them.

✅ Dogs don’t generalise well
If you teach “sit” in the kitchen and then move to the bed room, your dog will probably not perform the command as well. Why? Because it’s a new location with new distractions. Go back to the basics and consistently re-teach the behaviour. Once you have trained your dog in numerous locations, the success in a new location will occur faster.

✅ Pay attention to word-use
Dogs are actually quite simply. They try to react to the exact words you say. Therefore, you should know that “Come here” or “Come now” is not the same as “Come”.

✅ Practice makes perfect
You have to learn patterns and consistency as much as your dog. Train your dog for at least 15 minutes per day broken down into small 2-5 minute segments. And, be consistent with your dog training!

⭐Surviving adolescence ⭐

Adolescence is the teenage years for our dogs. This can be a particular hard time for dogs and owners, maybe the hardest time having a dog 🤯

Here's some informations and tips on surviving it

✅Train Your Teenager- take what you learn't in puppy class and continue to train throughout the teenage years. Consistent training will help your dog process the right choice when needed. Join a class so you have a weekly routine and exercises to work on.

✅Teach Attention- Teach a look at me or watch me cue and practice little and often and in different environments. Start easy and build to harder more distracting places e.g lounge, garden. front of house then park

✅Use a longline or lead- prevent your dog from running of, getting in to trouble by using a longline on walks. This gives your dog enough space to have fun and stops the practicing of behaviours we don't want. Be fun and encourage your dog to stay with you.

✅Keep His Brain Busy- The obedience training you do will help keep his brain busy, but other outlets for his mental energy are also needed. This is a great time to start trick training, or begin some fun scenting games. We can also look at enrichment with food like food-dispensing toys, scatter feeding, snuffle matts etc

✅Your dogs having a hard time not giving you one- be kind your dog is going through a difficult period in their life, just like a human teenager. Instead, focus on helping him be the best dog they can be . It may take a while but the relationship and love you will have at the end will be worth it❤️❤️❤️
