Some lovely work this Sunday morning trailing in the woods! Lots of discussion around airflow and scent movement with so many things affecting it today - light to shade, the breeze, the aspect and the growth of the plants, which has been rapid in the past few weeks all impacting how our dogs work.

Great work, Team Obi, Team Mila, Team Yusuke, Team Theo, Team Scooby, Team Quinn!

✨LEVEL 3 PASS!✨

A fab Level 3 for Team Ruby!

Ruby navigated several offlead dogs to successfully find her trail layer (and ignore her decoy!) in under 20mins!

This is especially excellent as Ruby struggles with others in her space, but the conditions were navigated excellently by dog and handler.

Very well done! 🎊

Some trailing around high distractions today on a sunny day in the school holidays! Lots of people and dogs around, but these teams did so well!

Wednesday and Thursdays teams were both working on some woodland trailing - with plenty of disruption with the fire service unfortunately having to put out fires caused by camp fires and BBQs both evenings, at both locations.

Teams worked on taking scent from novel scenarios, or long (400m +) trails.

Well done, Team Salem, Team Otto, Team Daisy, Team Ollie, Team Bryn, Team Otis, Team Bess, Team Tilly, Team Hallie!

TAKING SCENT 🐽.

An absolutely beautiful example of a targeted sniff from a rock that the trail layer has sat on recently, before laying a trail through the forest.

Getting a good target sniff isn't easy and is often the part of trailing that requires some training away from the active trail - but Salem and her handler have absolutely nailed it.

Last night we worked on this with Team Salem Team Ollie, Team Otto, Team Bryn, Team Daisy and Team Otis. Photos to follow later 🐾

Decoy exercise for our Tuesday morning gang!

This time it was a known person on the trail, that was not their target trail layer!

Great work and interesting trailing from Team Vinnie, Team Bonnie, Team Elmer, Team DeeDee, Team Ruby, Team Enfys!

An interesting trailing location Thursday evening - basically a motorway underpass with a river passing beneath. Lots of really interesting scent movement caused by vehicles above and water running through - also lots of distraction and challenges, trailing through tunnels for example!

Well done, Team Ollie, Team Loki, Team Jill, Team Chewie!

Some great woodland trailing for Wednesdays group!

This is always an interesting venue, sloped woodland and the direction which the wind is travelling up or down the slope massively influences where the dogs work the scent. Last night, all dogs worked ABOVE the trail layer and dropped down... Whereas it's more typical at this location for them to trail below and work up - but the wind was favourable coming u the valley, which meant it was actually less uphill work for all of us!

Well done Team Otis, Team Gracie, Team Gus, Team Mostyn, Team Bryn, Team Salem, Team Hallie!

✨Safe Patterns: Why Mantrailing May Be the Missing Piece of the Puzzle for Dogs with Behavioural Struggles ✨

Here at Taff Trailers, we work with many dogs who are experiencing behavioural struggles in day-to-day life, often rooted in low confidence and/or anxiety. It's a big part of our specialism, and honestly, one of the parts of the job I enjoy the most.

Over the years, I've seen trailing become a genuinely transformative part of a dog's life, building confidence in a carefully curated way that consistently sets the dog up for success.

But exactly why mantrailing can be so therapeutic for dogs who are struggling isn't always well understood, and I think it's a crucial piece of the puzzle that's often overlooked.

The key to meaningful behaviour change lies in the interplay between the independent decision-making that mantrailing encourages (as I've discussed previously), which builds self-belief and confidence, and the many built-in, predictable patterns that dogs learn to expect when they're trailing.

Why are patterns important?

Dogs (in fact, all mammals, including us!) are biologically hardwired to seek out and recognise patterns in the world around us. These can be patterns of behaviour, or patterns of events that consistently lead to a positive or negative outcome. Recognising these patterns keeps us safe and helps us make good decisions.

For example, most dogs recognise our little pre-walk routine as a pattern that predicts something good is about to happen.

All dogs, but especially those who struggle with anxiety, find comfort in familiar patterns because they're able to predict what comes next. There's less ambiguity, fewer surprises, and that predictability helps them cope.

Mantrailing is full of these built-in patterns, and I purposely lean into them because they're an essential part of what makes my sessions so effective.

There's the consistency of the trailing kit: the specific harness, the long line, the scent article. There's the starting ritual, which is unlike anything else a dog does in everyday life. It's a very distinctive sequence of movements and cues that tells the dog's brain exactly what's about to happen. The end of every trail follows the same predictable pattern too: the dog finds the person, and the dog is rewarded.

Over time, these consistent patterns become a safe foundation. The dog learns that they don't have to worry about what comes next because they already know the framework they're working within.

Of course, no two trails are ever exactly the same. Along the way, dogs will inevitably encounter challenges. Sometimes they're planned, such as asking a dog to cross a stream or work past something they find a little spooky. Sometimes they're incidental, like a member of the public suddenly appearing or a vehicle unexpectedly crossing the trail.

The important thing is that these unexpected moments happen within an otherwise very familiar, predictable framework.

The start is always recognisable. The equipment is the same. The movements are the same. The cues are the same. The end result is always the same too: finding the person and earning a fantastic reward.

That consistency gives dogs the confidence to work through challenges, or, if they do react, to recover more quickly.

Over time, it's incredibly rewarding to watch dogs struggle less with difficulties when they encounter them on a trail. In fact, experiencing novelty and unexpected challenges within a predictable framework appears to build resilience and mental flexibility that carries over into everyday life as well.

Built slowly, thoughtfully and carefully, I've watched dogs that started out with very low confidence and a naturally pessimistic outlook not only learn to cope with novelty, but begin to actively embrace it on their trails - Who cares if the human is dressed as an inflatable dragon, give me the food! 🌭

And, over time, that growing optimism doesn't stay confined to mantrailing. It starts to influence the dog's wider outlook too.

Mantrailing really can change a dog's life. 🐾
