The little jobs matter too

Animal care isn’t always the glamorous stuff. 😂

Fresh water, cleaning bowls, checking bedding, spotting little changes in behaviour, making sure everyone is eating properly and keeping their environment clean are all part of keeping animals happy and healthy.

It’s often those small, everyday checks that matter the most. ❤️

Because when animals can’t tell us something is wrong, knowing what’s normal for them is incredibly important.

🐟❤️ Fish can be surprisingly good at telling us when something has changed.

Koi and goldfish each have their own personalities, but changes in feeding response, activity or behaviour can be worth noticing.

Try to make feeding part of your regular observation routine:

🔹 Are they approaching food as usual?
🔹 Is one fish hanging back?
🔹 Are they eating comfortably?
🔹 Is uneaten food being left behind?
🔹 Does the water remain clean after feeding?

It can be tempting to feed more because fish always look interested, but the right amount depends on the fish, the conditions and the overall setup.

A calm, consistent routine is usually more useful than simply adding more food. 🌿

Does your pond have one fish that always gets to the food first?

A healthy pond is more than clear water

Crystal-clear water looks lovely, but a healthy pond is about much more than what we can see on the surface.

Good filtration, circulation, appropriate stocking and regular maintenance all work together to create a healthier environment for your fish. 🐟🌿

Whether it’s routine maintenance, improving an existing setup or giving a tired pond some attention, Creature Cove can help.

🔧💡 Pumps and UVs both play an important part in many pond systems — but they do different jobs.

The pump helps move water around the system, while a UV unit is commonly used to help manage green water by treating water as it passes through the unit.

As with any equipment, performance depends on the whole setup working properly.

It’s worth checking:

✅ Water is flowing at the right rate
✅ The pump is running consistently
✅ Hoses and connections are secure
✅ The UV is being maintained according to the manufacturer’s guidance
✅ There are no blockages stopping water moving freely

If a pond suddenly turns green or the flow drops, the cause may not be obvious straight away. A quick equipment check can be a useful place to start. 💧

Have you ever had a pump or UV issue that took longer to find than expected?

🧤🌿 Pond maintenance is rarely glamorous, but it makes a big difference.

Behind every healthy-looking pond is a routine of checking, cleaning, adjusting and keeping an eye on the details.

That might include:

🐟 Checking fish and feeding response
💧 Looking at water movement
🔧 Inspecting pumps and pipework
🌿 Removing unwanted debris
🧪 Keeping up with water testing
👀 Noticing small changes before they become bigger concerns

Every pond is different, so the best routine is one that suits the size of the pond, the fish, the equipment and the time of year.

If you enjoy pond care, what job do you find most satisfying — and which one do you always put off? 😂

Every animal is different

One of our favourite things about working with animals is how completely different their personalities can be.

You get the confident ones who immediately want to know what you’re doing, the cautious ones who need a little more time, the cuddle monsters… and the ones who quite clearly believe you work for them. 😂

Good animal care isn’t one-size-fits-all. Getting to know the individual animal is a huge part of it. ❤️

What would your pet’s personality be in three words?

💧🐠 Good filtration is about more than keeping water looking clear.

A pond or aquarium filter helps support water quality by dealing with waste and helping create a healthier environment for fish.

It’s important to remember that crystal-clear water does not always mean every water parameter is perfect. Regular maintenance and sensible testing can help you keep an eye on what’s happening beneath the surface.

A few useful habits include:

🔹 Checking that water is flowing as it should
🔹 Cleaning filter media appropriately
🔹 Avoiding over-cleaning beneficial media
🔹 Watching feeding levels
🔹 Keeping an eye on fish behaviour as well as appearance

Healthy water is the foundation of healthy aquatic life. 🐟

Going away?

Going away is exciting… but leaving your animals behind can be one of the hardest bits. ❤️

At Creature Cove, we know how important it is to be able to relax knowing your animals are being properly cared for in their own routine.

From feeds and cuddles to all those little individual quirks that make them them, good pet care is about much more than simply popping food in a bowl. 🐾

If you’ve got a trip coming up and need someone to care for your animals, feel free to get in touch.

🐟🌿 A quick pond check can help spot problems early.

When you’re looking around your pond, keep an eye out for:

✅ Fish behaving normally and coming for food
✅ Clear movement from pumps and returns
✅ Water flowing properly through filters
✅ No unusual smells, foam or sudden changes in water colour
✅ Fish showing no signs of clamped fins, rubbing or unusual hiding

Small changes can sometimes be easier to deal with when they’re noticed early, so regular checks are well worth making.

If something doesn’t look right, avoid making lots of changes at once. Check the basics first and take things step by step. 💧

🦎🐠 Specialist animals need specialist care — and the details matter.

Reptiles, aquarium fish, pond fish and other exotic pets can all have very different needs when it comes to:

🌡️ Temperature
💧 Water quality and humidity
💡 Lighting and UVB
🍽️ Feeding routines
🧼 Cleaning and hygiene
🏡 Enclosures, habitats and enrichment

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why understanding the individual species and setup is so important.

Whether you keep a single much-loved pet or a whole collection of animals, good care often comes down to consistency, observation and knowing what is normal for them.

At Creature Cove, we love seeing the variety of animals people care for. What species would you like us to feature more often? 👇
