Consultation Part 1: The Stable Consultation 🐴

So what actually happens when I arrive?

The first thing I do is nothing. 😊

I take my time and let your horse come to me before I start any assessment. It matters. They need to feel comfortable before I start handling their face and mouth, and rushing that bit sets the whole session off on the wrong foot.

✨ A proper chat with you

While your horse settles, we'll talk. I want to build a full picture, so I'll ask about things like:
πŸ”Ή When they last saw the dentist
πŸ”Ή Whether you've had a saddle fitter out
πŸ”Ή Any physio or bodywork they've had
πŸ”Ή Any changes you've noticed in them recently

I really believe I should be the last piece of the puzzle. If there's pain in the back, an ill-fitting saddle, or dental issues going on, no bit in the world is going to fix that. So the more of the picture we can piece together, the better I can help.

✨ The mouth assessment

This is the part most owners have never done themselves, and it's often eye-opening.

I'll have a proper feel inside your horse's mouth. I'm checking:
πŸ”Ή How sharp the bars are
πŸ”Ή Any sores, rubs or sensitive areas
πŸ”Ή Tongue size and how sensitive it is
πŸ”Ή How fleshy the lips are

Most people don't think to actually feel their horse's tongue and see how sensitive it is, and it's often one of the biggest clues to what will (and won't) work.

✨ Why this bit matters so much

Horses have very little space in their mouths for a bit. Add in their individual sensitivities and conformation, and you can see why a bit that suits one horse can be really uncomfortable for another.

By the time we've done all of this, I've already got an idea of the bit (or bits) that might suit your horse, before we've even tacked up.
Then, and only then, we move on to the ridden part. πŸ’›

Any questions, or want to arrange a consultation? Pop me a message, I'd love to help. 🐴

What actually happens in a consultation? 🐴

(Apart from lots of lovely horse talk, obviously...)

A consultation with me has two parts: the stable consultation and the ridden consultation. From start to finish we're looking at around an hour, but there's never a rush. This is your horse's time. πŸ’›

✨ The Stable Consultation
This is where I meet your horse and give them chance to get comfortable with me before I start handling them. While they settle, we'll have a proper chat about your current bit and bridle setup, any niggles or problems you've been noticing, and what you'd love to get out of the session.

Then I'll assess your horse's mouth. I'm looking at things like tongue size, how fleshy their lips are, and overall mouth conformation, all little clues that help me work out the kind of bit your horse will (and won't) be happy in.

Once we've done that, I'll ask you to tack up in your normal bit and bridle. Nothing changes just yet.

✨ The Ridden Consultation
This is where it gets really interesting. I'll watch you ride in your current setup so I can observe your horse's behaviour and pick up on anything they might be telling us. From there, we'll start making changes and trying different options until we find what genuinely works for your horse.

✨ What happens next
At the end, you'll have my honest recommendations and I'll help you source the right equipment for your horse. No guesswork, no being left to figure it out on your own.

If you've got a niggling feeling something isn't quite right, or you just want the reassurance of knowing it all fits properly, drop me a message. I'd love to help. πŸ’›

Hi, I'm Becky πŸ‘‹

For anyone new around here, lovely to have you.

I'm a LANTRA accredited Bit & Bridle Fit Consultant based in West Yorkshire, and I cover the whole of Yorkshire helping horse owners make sure their horse is genuinely comfortable and happy in their bit and bridle.

So much of what we put down to "behaviour" or "training issues" can actually come back to discomfort in the mouth or poor bridle fit. When that gets sorted, the change in the horse (and the confidence it gives the rider) is something really special to see. 🐴

Whether you've got a niggling feeling something isn't quite right, you're struggling with control, or you just want the reassurance of knowing everything fits properly, I'm here to help.

I'll be sharing more soon, tips, behind the scenes from fittings, and stories from horses and riders I've worked with.

Glad to have you here. πŸ’›
