🐾 Not all dogs who struggle around other dogs bark and lunge.

In fact, many dogs show subtle signs long before they react.

🐕Staring or fixating
🐕Refusing treats
🐕Body tension
🐕 Pulling towards or away from dogs
🐕Barking and lunging

These behaviours aren't your dog being "stubborn" or "naughty".

They're often signs that your dog is finding the situation difficult, overwhelming or simply doesn't yet know how to cope.

The earlier we learn to recognise these signs, the earlier we can step in and help our dogs feel safer, calmer and more confident.

❤️ Remember, struggling doesn't mean your dog is broken. It simply means they need support.

🐾 The Reality Of Owning A Dog Who Struggles Around Other Dogs 🐾

People often see the barking, lunging or pulling.
What they don't see is everything that happens before it.

They don't see you checking out of the window before every walk.

They don't see you crossing roads, turning around, hiding behind cars or ducking into driveways.

They don't see you scanning the horizon constantly looking for other dogs.

They don't see the stress you feel when you spot another dog before your dog does.

They don't see the frustration of feeling like every walk has become a military operation.

They definitely don't see the guilt of wondering if you're doing enough or comparing your dog to other dogs, wishing walks could be easier.

They certainly don't see the emotional toll it can take on you as thier guardian, because when your dog struggles, you struggle too.

The truth is, most dogs who react to other dogs aren't trying to be difficult.

Many are worried, overwhelmed, frustrated, overexcited or simply don't yet have the skills to cope in those situations.

That's exactly why I created the Calm & Confident Dog Course. Not to create the "perfect dog" or force dogs to tolerate situations they can't cope with. But to help dogs feel safer, calmer and more confident around other dogs, while helping their owners feel more confident too.

With a maximum of just 4 dogs per class, you'll receive personalised guidance while working at a distance your dog can cope with.

This isn't about forcing dogs into situations they're not ready for. It's about helping them feel safer, calmer and more confident around other dogs.

I'm incredibly proud to share that I've become a Pure Pet Food Ambassador alongside my English Bull Terrier, Honey. ❤️

"𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮."

It's a phrase that can make many professionals feel a little uncomfortable these days.

Not because the principle is wrong, but because it has often been used to justify the use of punishment, aversive tools, and force.

However, when I talk about working with the dog in front of you, I'm talking about understanding the individual in front of you and adapting your support to meet their needs.

This does not mean, changing your ethics, changing your commitment to welfare and reaching for harsher methods because progress isn't happening quickly enough.

Just recognising that every dog is different.

🐾 A fearful Romanian rescue may need much more distance from people than a confident Labrador.

🐾 A dog reacting because they are frightened may need a completely different approach to a dog reacting because they are frustrated and desperately want to interact.

🐾 A puppy struggling with confidence may need gentle exposure and opportunities to explore at their own pace.

🐾 An elderly dog with arthritis may need environmental changes and adapted enrichment rather than more training.

🐾 A dog who finds vet visits overwhelming may need months of preparation and confidence-building before they're comfortable being handled.

The principles remain the same.

We use positive reinforcement, we build trust, we listen to what the dog is telling us and we move at a pace the dog can cope with.

What changes is how we apply those principles to the individual in front of us.

For example, I recently worked with a dog whose reactivity was driven by frustration. He wasn't trying to make other dogs go away. In fact, his biggest struggle was when they left!

If I'd treated him like a fearful dog who needed more and more distance, I wouldn't have been addressing the real emotion behind the behaviour.
Instead, we focused on helping him cope with dogs moving away and building emotional regulation around that frustration.

Same force-free principles, just a different plan for a different dog.

That's what working with the dog in front of you means to me. Not changing the method or changing the route.

Because ethical, force-free training isn't about making the dog fit the plan.

It's about making the plan fit the dog. ❤️
