🐰 Rabbit Awareness Week 🐰

With the hot weather we’ve been having recently, now feels like a good time to talk about rabbit welfare and the dangers of flystrike.

Rabbits are often overlooked as being an “easy” pet to keep, but this really isn’t the case. They have complex needs and require just as much care and attention as any other pet.

Rabbits need plenty of space to run, jump, dig and explore. They should ideally be kept with a compatible rabbit companion, as they are highly social animals and can become lonely if kept on their own.

One of the most important parts of rabbit care is diet. Hay should make up the vast majority of what your rabbit eats and is essential for keeping both their teeth and digestive system healthy.

During warmer weather, it’s also important to be aware of flystrike. This painful and potentially fatal condition occurs when flies lay eggs on a rabbit, usually around the back end. The eggs can hatch into maggots within hours, making it a genuine emergency.

Rabbits that are overweight, elderly, have dental disease, mobility problems, or difficulty keeping themselves clean are at greater risk.

A few simple checks can make a huge difference:
☀️ Check your rabbit’s bottom daily
☀️ Keep living areas clean and dry
☀️ Feed plenty of hay
☀️ Ensure your rabbit has enough space and companionship
☀️ Contact your vet if you notice any soiling, diarrhoea, reduced appetite or changes in behaviour

As it’s Rabbit Awareness Week, it’s the perfect opportunity to give your bunny a quick health check and make sure they’re getting everything they need to live a happy, healthy life.

If you have any concerns about your rabbit’s health or welfare, please get in touch with us.

And of course, we’d love to see your rabbit photos in the comments! 🐇❤️

🐾 Hot Weather Reminder for Dog Owners ☀️

As temperatures rise this week, remember that dogs can easily suffer from heat stroke, which can be life-threatening. Unlike humans, dogs can't sweat the same way we do—they rely on panting to cool down, and it’s not always enough. We have had two pets in today struggling with heat stroke.

🔸 Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day
🔸 Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water
🔸 Never leave your dog in a parked car
🔸 Watch for signs of heat stroke: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting

Keep them safe, cool, and hydrated. If in any doubt at all, please stay indoors.

If you have a non-urgent appointment, and you're worried about bringing your pet out into this heat or in your oven on wheels (car), please call us to rearrange to a cooler day or time. 🐶❤️

If you are concerned about any of your pets, or would like advice, please call the practice on 01752 779999 ☀️ 🐾

Ida the proud Labrador mum and her massive litter of 13, yes 13, puppies came in for a health check recently. Ida needed some help from the vet as she suffered mastitis, and this meant her human mummy has had to help feed this huge brood!! She really is a super mum, but we don't blame her for counting the days down till her pups go to their new homes and she gets some peace and quiet once again! ❤️🐾

🐾 Everyone meet Ollie! 🐾

Ollie recently visited Roborough Vet to make use of a very special service that helps pets who struggle with routine grooming. ✨ What can you do when your dog needs regular grooming, but simply can’t cope with the grooming process? Whether it’s fear, anxiety, previous bad experiences, or age-related concerns, some pets find grooming incredibly stressful. We’re incredibly lucky to work with a wonderful qualified groomer who specialises in helping these dogs and cats. She comes into the practice and works alongside our veterinary team, with a vet and nurse overseeing the sedation, allowing pets to be groomed safely, comfortably, and with minimal stress. For pets like Ollie, this service can make all the difference. Not only does it help keep them looking their best, but it also prevents painful matting and supports their overall health and wellbeing. ❤️

A huge thank you to our fantastic groomer for the care, patience, and skill. 💈🐾

Tristam our lovely vet will be sailing to raise money for St Luke's ❤️

"We are aiming to raise money for the great work that St.Lukes Hospice does to support families and patients in the Southwest.

Our good friend Charles aka Bill Jones ,RIP ,would have loved to join us on this event as he always said that there's nothing quite like mucking about with boats.

We will try our best to sail his beloved yacht Mistra around the Eddystone Persuit course with his spirit in our hearts and minds.

Sailing and fundraising whilst taking part in the Eddystone Pursuit for St Luke's can really make a difference. This fantastic annual event is a highlight in the sailing calendar year bringing together yachts and crews from all over our local area raising vital funds for many different charities including St Luke's Hospice Plymouth."

On Friday, we had the pleasure of looking after this gorgeous little man called Bear. He came in for his neutering procedure and was a very brave boy throughout. We followed his journey throughout the day to show you how he got on and how the process works! Rest up bear and don’t think about your cherries…

Diego is a lovely ferret who came to see our ophthalmology certificate holder vet Dean as his owner had noticed a cloudy change to his eye. Diego has been diagnosed with a cataract - a disease process in the lens which causes cloudy changes. Luckily for Diego it is only one eye and not causing any pain so for now, he is being closely monitored. He was very good for his examination, a very brave boy! 👁️ 🐾
