Here at Agility For Paws we are all about Dog agility.

For me, agility was something I wanted to do when I was around 10 years old. Watching the dog agility at Olympia once a year was a huge highlight for me. It was 20 years later before my life was at a place where I could give a dog a great home. Along came Oliver and the agility addiction began ๐Ÿคฃ

Now my addiction has become my job and I couldn't be happier. I've created a club that I am so proud of.

My members are the most wonderful bunch you could find ๐Ÿคฃ. With an age difference of 60 years between my club members, agility is a sport for all.

Agility For Paws was created to be an inclusive club for anyone who wants to do agility with their dogs. Whether it's just to have some fun, create a stronger bond with your dog or to go on to compete in agility shows. All you need is a good attitude and a desire to develop a bond with your dog like no other sport can create.

So proud of baby Laylah today ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

She entered her first competition and won both her classes with clear rounds.

I had forgotten how nerve wracking it is stepping up onto the line with a new dog, you never really know how they will handle a show environment, but she nailed it ๐Ÿ’ช

Her confidence on her second run was even higher and she was even a bit cheeky ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

It's always important to take small steps with young dogs and take them to shows that are quieter to begin with and that are relaxed environments to help build confidence. I also think that when they train regularly in just a few places like we do, that they don't always expect to then go and do agility. Laylah has been going to shows since she was a puppy, but has only ever been around the rings and not competed. And I often wonder if it's a bit of a shock to them to be suddenly on the start line and doing agility. Obviously I know that's what she's going to do, but I can't explain that to her. But I'm sure she knows what she's doing now and she loved it ๐Ÿ˜

Back from a wonderful break in Devon with the woofs. We had a fabulous time, and explored beaches, forests, rock pools, I went paddleboarding (amazing something I've wanted to do for ages and loved it), and 3 dogs learned to swim (Zing learned to swim a few years ago and decided it really wasn't for him ๐Ÿคฃ). All refreshed and ready to get back to work ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ† Another WIN! ๐Ÿ†

What a boy! โค๏ธ

After winning into Grade 7 last week, we headed out again yesterday โ€” this time competing at the highest level โ€” and came home with a WIN! ๐Ÿฅฐ

I'm so ridiculously proud of him.

Getting to Grade 7 was a huge achievement, but actually going out and winning at Grade 7 feels pretty special too.

He's still very much a work in progress, and our handling certainly isn't perfect ๐Ÿ˜‚ but that's one of the things I love about agility.

You never really โ€œarriveโ€. There's always something to work on, something to improve and something new to learn.

For now thoughโ€ฆ I'm just going to enjoy this one. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ†

My Grade 7 boy!

Sometimes the best place to beโ€ฆ is nowhere near your dog! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Today we had a fantastic guest trainer Alan Jackson in to work on distance handling โ€” teaching our dogs to keep working even when we're not right beside them.

Distance handling can make such a difference on a course. It gives you more options, helps you get into the right position and, importantly, teaches your dog to take responsibility for their own line.

But it can also make agility accessible to people who can't run alongside their dog. Whether that's because of a disability, injury, age or simply because running isn't your thing, there are ways to train your dog to work at a distance and still enjoy the sport together. โค๏ธ

That's something that's really important to us at Agility For Paws. We want agility to be something that as many people as possible can enjoy with their dogs โ€” and we're always looking at ways to make training work for the individual dog and handler.

A few snippets from today's training ๐Ÿ‘‡

I love being able to bring different trainers and new ideas into our training, because there is ALWAYS something new to learn in agility! ๐Ÿพ

Could you and your dog benefit from learning distance handling?

Grade 7 ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

So proud of the barky one today. He needed 1 clear win to take him to grade 7 and smashed it by getting 2 clears.

It's been one rocky ride with him, but he's so worth it โค๏ธ

If you're going to your first agility show, here are some top tips for you.

Make sure you have been on the kennel club website and read the rules. There are a lot ๐Ÿ™ˆbut it is important to know them. It can be the difference between winning and being eliminated. A lot of independent shows follow similar rules as do the UKA, but you will neee to check their rules also as these can vary..

Make sure your dog is registered with the kennel club or UKA if entering one of their shows. And make sure your dog is measured before your first class.

I prepare as much as possible the night before and pack the car up. You will need to take dog leads, coats both human and dog, towels, chairs, something to cover your car and crates from the sun, food and drink both human and dog, lots of treats for your dog and make sure it's, your dogs favourite ones , a good pair of running shoes, change of socks and other clothes if its wet, umbrella, waterproofs, money (trade stands are usually very good ๐Ÿ™ˆ) and probably more things, please add them in the comments. You do need to pack for all weathers, we do live in England and weather is definitely unpredictable ๐Ÿ˜‚

I try to arrive at 7.30am if my class is up first, or it's sometimes possible to I walk the course if it's set at a different height if the class before me has only a few dogs. . This gives me chance to let the dogs out for a wee, get them some water in their crate, pay for my entries (if I'm doing a latenUKA entry) and walk the course, which all has to be done before 8.30am when shows normally start if im up first.

Keep your eye on the rings, Agility Plaza and ears listening for the tannoys, it is your responsibility to make sure you don't miss walking the course or miss your class.

Try to go when it is your turn in the running order, especially if it's a big class to help keep queues down. Leave space for the dog in front or you.

When it is your turn, you can enter the ring when asked or the dog before you has leff the ring and has their collar and lead on. Someone will usually then take your lead from you (remember dogs must run in flat collars with no tags or harnesses) and you can head to the start line. The scrime (person in tent) will say your name and will tell you when you can start. Never go before the scrime and judge say you can. If it is kennel club you are not allowed toys or foor in your hand. Independent and UKA allow toys but not food if you say you are running NFC

Run round the course and play this great game that is agility with your dog. Have fun and always make sure your dog has a positive experience in the ring, even if it goes a bit pear shaped ๐Ÿ˜‚

Collect your rosette and trophy if you did well, and take the best dog home with you

๐Ÿพ Ever wondered if your dog would enjoy agility?
We're hoping to bring back our Beginner Agility Taster Sessions later this summer, once the weather is a little kinder for our four-legged friends. โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿถ
These sessions are perfect if you've never tried agility before and would like to see what it's all aboutโ€”without committing to a full course.
Come along, meet us, have some fun, and find out whether agility is the right sport for you and your dog.
๐Ÿพ No previous agility experience needed. ๐Ÿพ A friendly, relaxed introduction. ๐Ÿพ An opportunity to see if you and your dog enjoy agility before joining a beginner course.
If this sounds like something you'd love to try, pop a ๐Ÿพ in the comments or send me a message, and I'll let you know as soon as the dates are released.
I can't wait to welcome some new teams to Agility for Paws!
